Principal/Senior Researcher – Video Standards
We are inviting motivated researchers and engineers to join our team in the Bay Area. The team develops cutting‑edge technologies in multimedia data compression, processing, transmission, analysis and beyond. Examples of research areas include video compression algorithms, future video coding standards, learned image and video compression, VR and 360 video coding and transmission, intelligent visual data analysis and representation, and future immersive data compression and processing (e.g., point cloud, light field).
- Master’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, statistics or a related field
- 5+ years of related working experience
- Publications at top‑tier peer‑reviewed conferences
- Interest and experience in video compression and video coding standards
- Strong coding skills in C/C++
- Ability to communicate and collaborate with other researchers/engineers
- Ability to think outside the box
- Proven track record of contributions to video coding standards
- Good understanding of state‑of‑the‑art video compression algorithms
- Experience with HEVC, VVC, VP9, AV1, AVS3
- Experience with the Joint Exploration Model by JVET
- Experience with learned image and video compression
- Research, design, implement and optimise novel algorithms/models that improve video compression performance in current or future codecs
- Summarise the developed algorithms into academic papers, standard contributions and patent applications
- Represent the company in standard meetings and academic conferences
The base pay range for this position in California is $151,800 to $211,300 per year. Actual pay is based on market location and may vary depending on job‑related knowledge, skills and experience. Performance bonus, sign‑on payment, relocation package and restricted stock units may be included in the compensation package, as well as other medical, financial and other benefits, depending on the specific position offered.

Tencent Media Lab is committed to research and development of emerging multimedia technologies that can be used for both existing and envisaged applications. Notable work focuses on advanced compression of audio, video and volumetric media content; media network transmission and real‑time communication; processing, analysis, understanding and quality assessment of multimedia content based on signal processing and deep learning; and system design of end‑to‑end solutions for immersive media (XR, volumetric, and holographic).
The Lab also contributes to the development of international technology standards in fields such as multimedia data compression, network transmission protocols, multimedia systems, and open‑source projects.
