Overview
Land, Buildings & Real Estate (LBRE) is the operational core of Stanford University’s physical campus. LBRE constructs and maintains the Stanford campus, supporting teaching and research. The Grounds Services Department aims to provide a beautiful and safe outdoor experience for students, faculty, staff and visitors.
We have an immediate position for a Tree Program Supervisor.
What you will do in this role- Supervise and monitor one or more tree special crews in their daily activities.
- Schedule and assign work to staff.
- Direct and lead workers in completing assigned work.
- Monitor work and project activity progress and make necessary changes.
- Record job site information and check crew performance for accuracy and completeness.
- Assist in hiring and recruiting.
- Oversee performance management and conduct annual performance evaluations and development planning and training.
- Support assigned project activities; ensure compliance with larger unit goals.
- Coordinate and facilitate health and safety programs and training; document incident reports as required.
- Track budget for area of responsibility and provide time and workforce needs and estimates based on cost analyses; ensure work is completed per price and agreement.
- Implement, interpret, and manage policies and procedures for operations and facilities management; assist in policy development.
- Manage service contracts where applicable and coordinate maintenance and repairs of equipment and vehicles.
- Coordinate activities of the horticultural trade and renovation with Stanford staff, subcontractors, and/or vendors.
- Manage and facilitate waste disposal for the tree crew.
- Assist the manager in determining tree care needs and work schedules; arrange pre-notification of the public for work in campus areas.
- Assist in determining tree maintenance work and coordinate operations with other University departments on cooperative projects.
- Inspect trucks, tools and equipment for safe condition and efficient operation; coordinate necessary repairs.
- Other duties as assigned.
- A combination of education, training and experience performing responsibilities similar to those listed above.
- Minimum of 5 years in the arboricultural field and experience with managing and leading a tree crew.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, training, and performance management.
- Certified arborist preferred; if not certified, must commit to obtain certification within 12 months of employment.
- Principles of tree biology, TRAQ rating preferred.
- Experience in materials, methods, practices and equipment usage in tree maintenance, planting, preservation and pest management activities.
- Knowledge of budget preparation and expenditure control.
- Experience with maintenance, planting, preservation and pest management activities in urban forestry.
- Ability to manage occupational hazards and standard safety precautions, including line clearance tree pruning.
- Record keeping and reporting procedures, including computerized maintenance systems.
- Ability to integrate pest management principles and techniques.
- Knowledge and experience with pesticide application regulations in urban forestry.
- Entrepreneurial methods and techniques used in the public sector; ability to manage contractual services.
- Valid California non-commercial Class C Driver's License;
Class A (CDL) license preferred.
Additional Information:
- Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial Class C Driver’s License.
Physical Requirements
:
- Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks, and lift/carry/push/pull objects up to 10 pounds.
- Occasionally stand/walk, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp, and lift/carry/pull objects up to 11–20 pounds.
- Rarely kneel/crawl, climb, reach above shoulders, write by hand, or lift/carry/pull objects above 40 pounds.
- Ability to drive day or night.
Working Conditions:
- Requires 24-hour response availability seven days per week for emergencies.
- May be exposed to noise > 80dB TWA.
- May work at heights 4–10 ft and in all types of weather; may require overtime, evenings and weekends, including holidays.
