Job SummaryThe Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is part of a collaborative team of Attending Physicians, Fellows, and a team of NPs and PAs. The APP team is highly respected and serves as the go‑to group for attendings, actively participating in the education of fellows and visiting residents.
Responsibilities- Receive overnight sign‑out and perform pre‑rounding on assigned patients.
- Develop a plan of care for the day and present patients on rounds.
- Write a daily note and implement the agreed plan during the day.
- Respond to any issues raised by nurses throughout the day.
- Perform credentialed procedures: intubation, central line placement, arterial line placement, chest tube insertion and removal, PD drain placement, pacing wire removal, and other designated procedures after competency.
- Provide only medical services within one’s competency, in collaboration with a physician.
- Consult or refer cases exceeding one’s level of competence to a supervising physician.
- Evaluate, treat, and conduct physical examinations for patients with acute, chronic, or health maintenance concerns.
- Obtain complete histories, perform pertinent physical exams, and assess findings.
- Order and interpret diagnostic studies, administer and prescribe medications, and manage specimens for laboratory tests.
- Order ancillary services and coordinate inpatient and outpatient care as needed.
- Assist in the operating room as directed, observing standardized procedures and maintaining appropriate roles.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, staff, and community members from diverse backgrounds.
- Initiate life‑saving procedures when necessary and ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and clinical policies.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and provide patient teaching and counseling.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Undergo supervision by the supervising physician, with a maximum of four NP/PAs supervised concurrently.
- Receive formal annual performance evaluations and ongoing professional practice reviews (OPPE).
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education, experience, licenses, and certifications that satisfies the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Education- Physician Assistant:
Bachelor’s degree or above from an accredited institution and graduation from a PA program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. - Nurse Practitioner:
Master’s or doctoral degree in nursing from an accredited institution and graduation from an NP program accredited by the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
- Physician Assistant:
- Certified PA in the State of California and NCCPA certification.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
- DEA license for prescribing Schedule II–V controlled substances if applicable.
- Additional board certifications may be required by certain services.
- Nurse Practitioner:
- Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of California and NP certification in the State of California.
- National Board Certification as NP from an ABNS‑accredited agency.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
- Furnishing license from the Board of Registered Nursing if furnishing medications.
- DEA license for prescribing Schedule II–V controlled substances if applicable.
- Additional board certifications may be required by certain specialties.
