Job Summary

The Clinical/Medical Assistant (CMA) functions as a member of the clinic patient care team and serves as both Clinic Assistant and Medical Assistant as directed by the Clinic Manager or designee. Responsibilities include completing patient check-in/check-out, coordinating the HMO referral and service authorization process, and performing other clinic front-desk activities. The CMA performs routine administrative, clerical, and technical tasks to assist medical and nursing staff in examination and treatment.

Clinical duties include taking vital signs, injections, simple diagnostic tests, specimen collection, blood draws, sterilizing and cleaning equipment, and maintaining examination rooms and supplies.

Essential Functions
  • Escort patient to exam room and measure/record vital signs.
  • Prepare patient for examination or treatment; perform routine screening tests and explain procedures to patients.
  • Assist physicians with procedures; administer medications by intradermal, subcutaneous, or intramuscular injections; perform skin tests, venipunctures, and other tasks under supervision; verify medication and dosage before administration.
  • Perform routine examinations and treatments, including applying/removing dressings, removing sutures and casts, cleaning wounds, preparing patients for examinations, ear lavage, shaving, and disinfecting treatment sites.
  • Schedule and coordinate patient appointments using the scheduling system for new and returning patients.
  • Collect patient demographic and insurance data; enter into systems and assign medical record numbers.
  • Ensure appropriate verifications and authorizations are completed before the patient sees the provider.
  • Collect and send specimens to appropriate labs per protocol.
  • Document patient concerns, symptoms, and changes; maintain accurate patient documentation according to medical standards.
  • Process prescription refill requests according to established practice.
  • Prepare equipment and supplies for exams; maintain inventory and keep exam rooms, hallways, and work areas clean and orderly.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, including any required licenses or certifications, is acceptable.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a recognized Medical Assistant training program or equivalent per Business and Professions Code section 1366.

Experience: One (1) year of progressively responsible and directly related work experience.

License/Certification: Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers.

Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of inventory management practices.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and software used in the functional area.
  • Ability to educate patients and families on disease and treatment.
  • Ability to perform standard clinical procedures per established protocols.
  • Effective communication and writing skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and customer service skills; ability to work in high-volume, stressful situations.
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, work independently, and meet deadlines.

Additional Information Pay Range

Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role and may reflect education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities. Typical starting salary is at the minimum to mid salary range.

Minimum to Midpoint Range (Hourly): $33.98 to $38.52
