Position: Lab Assistant for Killifish Husbandry and Research (Schedule: Monday-Friday)

Overview

School of Medicine, Stanford, California, United States. The Department of Genetics at Stanford University is looking for a full-time fish technician to assist with research on aging and age-related diseases. This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and governed by the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007. The fish technician will care for the short-lived African killifish, a model to study aging and age-related diseases, and will perform laboratory procedures involving this fish.

The ideal candidate is well-organized, reliable, motivated, and able to interact effectively with team members. Prior fish husbandry experience is desired but not required.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain various strains of fish.
  • Maintain the Aquatic Housing Systems, including checking water parameters, preparing food, regular feeding, and sterilizing fish tanks.
  • Recognize and report signs of illness or behavioral abnormalities.
  • Take a fish census and record information, such as deaths.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records on fish inventory and breeding.
  • Treat animals under the direction of a post-doctoral fellow(s).
  • Set up breeding tanks and collect fish embryos, and hatch developed embryos.
  • Perform lab procedures such as genotyping.
  • Perform lab procedures such as tissue dissection, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, and fish transgenesis.
  • Organize the fish room.
  • Feed the fish during weekends (approximately once a month, Saturday and Sunday).
Qualifications (required)
  • Demonstrated habits of cleanliness and neatness.
  • Ability to keep detailed records.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions in English.
  • Understanding of techniques required to care for animals.
  • Computer experience to maintain breeding records and other documents preferred.
  • Ability to work in a pathogen-free environment using established procedures.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least two years of animal work experience is desired; experience with fish is highly desired.
  • Computer experience (Excel, Word, email, etc.) to maintain breeding records and other documents preferred.
Education & Experience (required)

This position requires a minimum of one year of Laboratory Assistant I level or a combination of education and relevant experience.

  • In addition to the qualifications listed for Laboratory Glassware Washer, demonstrated initiative and good judgment.
  • Ability to perform work with a minimum of error under general supervision.
  • Ability to train others in aspects of Lab Assistant work.

Physical Requirements
  • Manual dexterity to perform assigned tasks.
  • Write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts.
  • Frequently stand/walk, perform seated work, operate special machines.
  • Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, light fine grasping.
  • Lift/carry/push/pull objects up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasionally move heavier items such as chairs or lab equipment; packages of supplies; drums containing 2 to 15 gallons, depending on ability.
  • Occasionally pull a wheeled Glassware cart weighing approximately 100 pounds.

Working Conditions

Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, Lab Assistants may work near animals, chemicals, gases, or hazardous materials. Follow all safety requirements and procedures, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.

The expected pay range for this position is $31.87 (step
1) to $38.48 (step 10) per hour. Stanford provides pay ranges as a good faith estimate of compensation. The final pay offered will depend on factors such as scope and responsibilities, candidate qualifications, budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
