Brief OverviewThe Office of Decedent Affairs manages postmortem care, storage of remains, and release of remains across Stanford Health Care, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, and Tri-Valley Pleasanton. Coordinators work within the clinical setting with nurses and physicians to provide compassionate post-mortem care, ensuring dignity, respect, and honor of patient final wishes. The office supports families with emotional and logistical needs to create closure and continuity of care after death.

What You Will Do- Supports patients prior to death.
- Assists nursing and medical teams with all aspects of postmortem care.
- Works directly with patients and families in complex and sensitive cases of fetal demise and perinatal loss.
- Provides guidance to patients, families, and hospital staff as part of the patient care team.
- Serves as primary point of contact for families during and after a patient’s death for disposition and funeral home releases.
- Consults with Spiritual Care Services and refers families as needed for grief support and religious/cultural needs.
- Works with families and staff to respect the deceased’s cultural and religious practices.
- Obtains valid consent for autopsy and provides follow-up after the exam.
- Collaborates with physicians, nursing, police, medical examiner, risk management, and other entities to ensure timely disposition with minimal liability to the hospital.
- Handles disposition of fetal remains when families elect hospital disposition.
- Manages patient transport teams after death to transport to the morgue.
