Under medical supervision, the Lead Obstetrical Technician functions as a lead member of the patient care support team. The Lead Obstetrical Technician facilitates the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures; ensuring that the operating room or Labor/Delivery/Recovery (LDR) is safe, the rooms are properly stocked with supplies, that equipment functions properly, and that the procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

Under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse (RN), performs routine patient care duties such as collecting, recording and reporting patient data in a timely and accurate manner. The Lead Obstetrical Technician trains and coordinates the work of others and works closely with the assigned supervisor to ensure effective functioning of the unit.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital's policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct.

  • In coordination with the Patient Care Manager or Assistant Patient Care Manager, is partially accountable for work product of others including assigning work, assessing workflows and making recommendations for improvements, checking work for timeliness and accuracy, establishing work standards, scheduling work, and providing input to management actions.
  • Responsible for leading and coordinating the technical tasks of a multi-faceted patient care unit to ensure both a smoothly functioning unit and good patient relations. Functions as the lead source person with regards to department/hospital policies and procedures.
  • After documented instruction and competency evaluation: sets-up and scrubs for procedures; vaginal deliveries, cesarean sections, postpartum tubal ligations, cervical cerclage, dilatation and curettage, dilatation and evacuation, emergency abdominal hysterectomies, amnio infusion and any other specialist procedure for the obstetric patient
  • Practices aseptic technique according to established standards of care and infection control policies.
  • Assures the C-Section rooms are ready for emergency procedures.
  • Removes instruments from Labor and Delivery Room (LDR) and/or C-section room, rinses, counts and soaks instruments in appropriate containers.
  • Maintains a clean, safe and functional work environment.
  • Restocks operating rooms and LDRs with supplies as required.
  • Assures replacement or repair of malfunctioning equipment and instruments.
  • Sets up and maintains oxygen therapy equipment, including changing tanks.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies in utility rooms as assigned.
  • Assists with treatments and procedures.
  • Handles specimens and medications using correct technique and according to the departmental policy and procedure.
  • Assists with transfer of patients from Labor & Delivery if transport team is not available.
  • Supports the development of unit/team goals and actively participates in unit staff meetings, in-services, and educational programs as required.
  • Orients, trains and coordinates the work of others and works closely with the assigned supervisor to ensure the efficient functioning of the unit.
  • May be assigned small projects under the direction of the management team
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience: Two (2) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience

License/Certification:

  • RQI Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support
  • Basic Life Support by American Heart Association (AHA)
