About Subsense
Subsense is a deep-tech company developing the world’s first non-surgical, bidirectional brain-computer interface powered by plasmonic and magneto electric nanoparticles. Our mission is to unlock direct communication between the human brain and AI - starting with medical applications such as stroke recovery and moving toward cognitive enhancement for healthy users. Headquartered in Palo Alto, Subsense brings together leading scientists and engineers to redefine the future of human–machine interaction.
TheOpportunity
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design, prototype, and refine mechanical systems that support experimental neurotechnology platforms. This role focuses on precision hardware, fixtures, enclosures, and experimental setups that enable reliable electrical, optical, and biological testing. You will work closely with electrical engineers, firmware engineers, materials scientists, and neuroscientists to translate experimental requirements into robust mechanical designs. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys hands-on prototyping, cares deeply about precision and repeatability, and thrives in a fast-paced, research-oriented startup environment.
Key Responsibilities- Design and develop mechanical components, fixtures, and enclosures for experimental neurotechnology systems
- Create CAD models, drawings, and assemblies to support prototyping and iteration
- Build, assemble, and test mechanical prototypes, including rapid iteration based on experimental feedback
- Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure mechanical designs integrate with electrical, firmware, optical, and biological systems
- Select materials and manufacturing methods appropriate for precision, biocompatibility, and experimental constraints
- Support tolerance analysis, fit-up, and alignment for sensitive experimental setups
- Maintain clear mechanical documentation, drawings, and revision control
- Assist with scaling designs from early prototypes to more repeatable experimental hardware
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
- Strong fundamentals in mechanical design, materials, and manufacturing processes
- Experience with CAD tools (e.g., Solid Works, Fusion 360, or equivalent)
- Hands-on prototyping experience through labs, internships, or industry roles
- Familiarity with machining, 3D printing, and basic fabrication techniques
- Ability to work closely with electrical and firmware teams on integrated systems
- Strong attention to detail and appreciation for experimental rigor
- Comfort operating in a fast-moving, early-stage startup environment
