Product Engineer, Industrial Storage

Overview

The Tesla Energy Product and Service Engineering team is seeking a Product Engineer to support the growth of our Industrial Storage fleet. The role focuses on maintaining industry-leading uptime for deployed commercial and utility-scale batteries, using data from connected systems to identify and eliminate downtime causes. You will lead the identification and root cause analysis of design, process, firmware, and software failures in Tesla’s energy storage systems, diagnose issues across power converters, battery modules, digital control systems, heating and cooling, and develop automated detection and corrective actions to reduce recurrence.

The goal is to improve uptime for Tesla’s stationary batteries used by grid-connected and microgrid customers. Successful candidates will be skilled in troubleshooting electronic systems, mechanical systems, and computer networks, and will be capable of developing code and manipulating SQL data. • Mine data logged by Tesla's Industrial Storage fleet to define failure mode fingerprints and use Tesla automation tools for programmatic diagnosis and future detection of that failure mode.
• Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and firmware issues that cause downtime for Industrial Storage customers.
• Lead cross-functional efforts with manufacturing, design, field service, and technical support to prevent known issues from reoccurring.
• Define actions for field service and technical support when a specific failure mode occurs, publish those actions in Tesla's service tools, and develop any specialized training required.
• Quantify the benefit of product or manufacturing improvements and work with engineering and manufacturing teams to implement improvements for existing and future products.
• Provide support on escalated customer cases to minimize system downtime.
• Collaborate with field service and technical support to create documentation and training for commissioning, operation, repair, and service of Tesla's Industrial Storage products installed globally.

• Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
• Experience using SQL and Python for data analysis on very large databases.
• Strong engineering fundamentals applied to firmware/software-enabled systems.
• Prior experience troubleshooting electrical, system, firmware, or process failure modes.
• Proven cross-functional leadership and collaborative skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to produce clear, concise written documents and diagrams.
• Experience with battery systems and power systems is a plus.
• Experience with managing or maintaining Linux-based applications is a plus.

Expected Compensation: $100,000 – $180,000 annual salary plus cash and stock awards and benefits. Pay may vary based on location, knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package may include other elements depending on the position offered. Details will be provided if an offer is extended.
