Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer, Car Computer
Join Tesla as a Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer in the Autopilot and Electronics Product Design team. The role involves designing electronic modules for the Tesla Car Computer group and leading mechanical system design for compute, connectivity and related features.
What You'll Do- Work closely with cross‑functional teams to define product requirements and develop implementations.
- Participate in prototype builds, component fabrication, testing and validation efforts; provide hands‑on support and data analysis.
- Develop designs in CAD for detailed parts and assemblies.
- Perform tolerance analysis, FEA and other simulations and analyses before releasing designs for production.
- Create 2D drawings appropriate for production and inspection methods.
- Conduct Design for Manufacturing reviews with suppliers and support tooling bring‑up.
- Optimize components while considering performance, integration, size, mass, assembly and more.
- Model and design mechanical components and assemblies including plastic, sheet metal, die cast etc.
- Support development of engineering and reliability test plans, test data analysis and troubleshooting of design issues.
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience.
- Proficiency in CAD (Catia preferred), tolerance analysis, quality control, data and statistical analysis, failure analysis, GD&T.
- Proficiency in design of plastic injection‑molded, sheet‑metal stamping and cast parts.
- Proficiency in running experiments, DOEs and characterization studies.
- Experience with MATLAB, Python, FEA (ANSYS preferred).
- Experience taking designs from initial concept through to mass production.
- Ability to perform first‑principles analysis to ensure a successful design (physics, stress‑strain, thermal, tolerance, cost and mass optimization, etc.).
- Compensation: $106,400 - $256,200/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits.
