Job Description & How to Apply Below

What to Expect

Tesla seeks a Field Reliability Engineer with a strong background in electric automotive systems such as Powertrain, High Voltage battery, and Chassis design to drive reliability excellence for the Tesla Semi. This role defines and ensures exceptional reliability across the product lifecycle—from concept through design, development, manufacturing, and field operation. As a key technical contributor, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams (design, manufacturing, service, suppliers) to identify failure modes, analyze field data, validate countermeasures, and implement solutions that uphold Tesla's mission of delivering reliable electric vehicles.

Responsibilities include conducting failure analysis, designing field-replication experiments, monitoring performance trends, and providing upfront design feedback to mitigate risks. The ideal candidate will establish robust reliability methodologies, prioritize issues by impact, and support scalable, data-driven improvements while maintaining rigorous documentation and alignment with Tesla’s technology commitments.

What You'll Do
  • Identify root causes by performing detailed failure analysis using a wide range of analytical tools and techniques, including data analysis and functional testing
  • Drive issue resolution from root cause analysis to countermeasure implementation on all field-related issues
  • Design and conduct experiments to replicate failures observed in the field
  • Analyze and interpret field and diagnostic logs/data to identify common patterns in trending issues
  • Monitor product field performance, identify trending issues, and prioritize work based on severity, occurrence, and cost of each failure mode
  • Provide upfront feedback by participating in design reviews to ensure product performance, reliability, and manufacturability issues are identified and risks mitigated (DFMEAs)
  • Collaborate with engineers, suppliers, service, and manufacturers to drive resolution to identified failure causes
What You'll Bring
  • Prior experience in a hands-on role such as Failure Analysis, Quality, or Service Engineer in consumer electronics or automotive industry
  • Exceptional problem-solving and failure analysis skills, strong attention to detail, and analytical thinking
  • Ability to use tools and business system applications to manage, synthesize, and interpret data
  • Experience with programming languages and tools such as MATLAB or Python; SQL is a strong plus
  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Genuine passion for engineering products that will fundamentally change the world, with self-motivation to push boundaries
  • Strong technical first-principles understanding, excellent problem-solving skills, and genuine fascination for engineering
  • Experience with analytical reliability methods like Weibull analysis and failure rate estimations is desired
