What to Expect
The Failure Analysis Team's mission is to determine root cause and contributing factors to improve the experience of Tesla's products by reducing field issues, in collaboration with a community of other engineering teams. Engineers and technicians on the team are responsible for a wide variety of vehicle and energy product systems for existing models and models in development. This extremely high visibility individual contributor role requires extensive hands‑on work focused on electromechanical failure analysis and root cause activities.
We are seeking an enthusiastic, fast‑learning engineer who finds enjoyment in understanding how things work and how we can correct and prevent issues from occurring. They will be responsible for assistance with diagnosing electromechanical concerns.
A successful candidate will need to be familiar with various analysis techniques involving non‑destructive and destructive methods. Examples of those include capturing and understanding 2D X‑ray data, mechanical sample preparation, assembly tear down, cross sectioning, basic electrical fault isolation, and summarizing findings while reporting mechanism and cause of failure. They will work alongside experienced engineers while utilizing sophisticated failure analysis tools to identify failure mechanisms observed in engineering, production, and field environments.
As an industry leading company, Tesla offers the opportunity to work on industry leading products and bleeding edge technology in a fast paced, dynamic, and high visibility role.
What You’ll Do- Lead and support analysis activities for electromechanical assemblies, ultimately leading a collaborative team to failure mechanism, root cause, and corrective action for various issues across Tesla's product portfolio.
- Utilize intermediate and advanced analytical tools covering various analysis techniques, including optical microscopes, sample preparation devices, industrial X‑ray (including 2D and 3D techniques), SEM with EDS, XRF, LIBS, FTIR, and others.
- Be or become familiar with a multitude of electromechanical assemblies and their theories of operation and apply that knowledge for understanding of possible failure modes and mechanisms.
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering, with proven application of knowledge in recent job history, or equivalent experience.
- Understanding of multiple non‑destructive and destructive analysis tools and perception of the operating theory behind those.
- 4+ Years of hands‑on experience working in an analytical lab, automotive repair, or similar roles highlighting dexterous ability and problem‑solving skills.
- Familiarity with deconstructing electrical or electromechanical assemblies to their subcomponents while maintaining integrity of items.
- Proven experience in debugging and isolation of faults in electromechanical assemblies where location of failures was determined using electrical characterization tools.
- Showcase examples of complicated teardown processes and how the respective candidate developed the process to lead to confirmation of a mechanism of failure.
