Heralded as a hub of undergraduate innovation, the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) creates and sustains meaningful interactions between students and faculty both within and outside the classroom. As a team member of VPUE, you will advance and support programs that touch and enhance the lives of every undergraduate student at Stanford.
Responsibilities- Direct freshman and new transfer transition programming on behalf of the University, including Approaching Stanford, New Student Move-In, and New Student Orientation (one of Stanford’s “Big 5” events).
- Oversee onboarding and orientation for mid-year and off-cycle enrollees.
- Establish and maintain the University’s relationship with new students’ parents and family members.
- Serve as a content expert in new student onboarding, orientation, and transition; lead in developing class community and belonging for new undergraduates.
- Manage three professional/administrative staff members, supervise six paid student staff members, and ~60 student orientation volunteers; budget responsibility for approximately $1.25 million.
- Manage professional staff, hire decisions, coaching, mentoring, performance management, and staffing levels (Assistant Director, Systems Administrator, Program Associate).
- Direct processes and programs for onboarding, orienting, and guiding the transition of all incoming undergraduates to Stanford.
- Identify and establish collaborative working relationships with key campus partners and external partners; align learning outcomes across units.
- Interpret, implement, and ensure compliance with university policies; recommend new internal policies, guidelines, and procedures.
- Lead the implementation of technology in new student programming (Approaching Stanford Forms, weekly e-Newsletters, digital Handbook, Canvas course, new student requirements, Cvent, and website strategy/management).
- Resolve program issues with substantial significance across multiple areas; use independent judgment to mediate complex issues, especially for individual new student situations.
- Represent the New Student & Co-Curricular Programs Team, Academic Advising, VPUE, and Stanford to incoming students, families, campus partners, external partners, and schools.
- Respond to inquiries regarding policies and academic rules; provide recommendations for correction.
- Develop long-range planning and policy development for new student programming; manage and forecast budgets considering class size.
- Occasional nights/weekends required for event execution; perform desk-based computer tasks; some physical activity and light lifting up to 10 pounds.

- Required: Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
- Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate with internal and external audiences (including new students, student leaders, parental contacts, faculty, campus partners, and management).
- Advanced computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite; experience with relevant systems/technology).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; robust leadership and strategic management abilities.
- Demonstrated experience managing people; strong interpersonal skills; ability to work with a diverse student body.
- Preferred: Experience in a higher education setting; experience with onboarding and transition programs at Stanford (Approaching Stanford, New Student Orientation, mid-year processes).
