Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in providing instructional support, child/health care activities and prescribed specialized one-to-one services to an individual student placed in a special education program because of specific learning disabilities, severe emotional and behavioral issues, orthopedic disabilities and/or other limiting conditions; monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance; perform a variety of clerical and instructional duties in support of the instructional program as required by the disabling/limiting condition of the student and according to his or her established Individual Education Plan (IEP).
The goal of this position is to help students become independent learners so they no longer need a one-to-one attendant.

- Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to students in an assigned special education program such as mainstreamed class, general education classroom, physical education, recess, lunch, or other activities as assigned.
- Provide personal care or health assistance to individual special education students in any setting to which they are assigned. Attend all required training in order to perform tasks required in individual plans.
- Assist students in understanding and comprehension of classroom assignments; explain errors and answer questions to reinforce the main lesson plans; assist students with problem solving tasks, reading, English and other assignments.
- Reinforce instruction to students with physical handicaps, medical conditions, learning disabilities, communication and/or behavioral issues; confer with and take direction from teachers, counselors, psychologists, nurses and administrators concerning programs and material.
