Basic Needs Student Care Coordinator, Dean of Students Office

The Basic Needs Student Care Coordinator provides non-clinical case management and basic needs coordination for the Dean of Students (DoS) Office and First Generation and/or Low Income Student Success Center (FLISSC). Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Students, with dotted-line relationship to the Associate Dean and Director of FLISSC, this role collaborates with the DoS and FLISSC teams to provide follow-up and logistical support to individual students and student groups;

connect students to basic needs resources and community-based support; and design and implement services that foster belonging and student success.

Responsibilities

  • Provide non-clinical assessment of student needs and employ case management interventions to advise and connect students to resources on- and off-campus.
  • Offer short-term direct support to students facing basic needs challenges (food, housing, caregiving, well-being, financial needs) and assist in making informed decisions and connections to resources.
  • Coordinate with campus partner offices to ensure individual student support and programmatic efforts (partners may include CECL, Residential Education, Graduate Life Office, Financial Aid Office, and R&DE Housing Assignments).
  • Deliver targeted support to first-generation, low-income, and former foster youth students, serving as liaison between the DoS Office and FLISSC, and support programming in both offices.
  • Manage the DoS basic needs pantry to provide food and personal care items and connect students with long-term assistance via university and community resources.
  • Administer the DoS Office Student Emergency Fund, documenting transactions per university policy and collaborating with FLISSC and the Financial Aid Office.
  • Proactively identify students at risk of unmet basic needs and engage them with available support while advocating for access to resources and removal of barriers to academic success.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate programming that fosters community, belonging, and resilience, including housing, food security, childcare, and logistical supports (e.g., winter travel).
  • Develop and maintain a directory of campus and community basic needs resources to promote awareness of aid programs and services for students.
  • Coordinate outreach and resources after major incidents such as natural disasters in a student’s home community.
  • Document all student support and interventions in the case management database; make referrals to CAPS, SHARE Title IX and Title VI Office, Confidential Support Team, and others as needed to ensure continuity of care.
  • Track, evaluate, and report on intervention effectiveness to demonstrate impact and inform campus well-being initiatives.
  • Provide administrative support for database and record-keeping in the DoS Office and assist in developing relevant policies and procedures.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Education;
    Student Development;
    Counseling;
    Social Work or a related field.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong communication skills to clearly convey information to students, campus and community partners, and management.
  • Advanced analysis and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and record-keeping databases.
  • Understanding of basic financial stewardship practices.
  • Ability to communicate sensitive and confidential matters within FERPA guidelines.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.

Working Conditions

  • Evening and weekend hours may be required.
  • This is a hybrid position requiring at least 4 designated days onsite per week.
