Overview
The Basic Needs Student Care Coordinator provides non-clinical case management and basic needs coordination for the Dean of Students (DoS) Office and First Generation and/or Low Income Student Success Center (FLISSC). Reporting directly to the Senior Associate Dean of Students, with dotted-line relationship to the Associate Dean and Director of FLISSC, the Basic Needs Student Care Coordinator works closely with both the DoS and FLISSC teams to provide follow-up and logistical support to individual students and to student groups;
connect students to basic needs resources and community-based support; coordinate, and implement services that fosters community, promotes belonging, and supports student success.
- Provide non-clinical assessment of student needs and employ case management interventions, as appropriate, to advise and support students and connect them to resources both on and off-campus;
- Provide short-term direct support to students facing basic needs challenges such as food, housing, caregiving, well-being, and general financial need. Assist students in making informed decisions and connecting to resources as appropriate;
- Coordinate with staff from campus partner offices to ensure individual student support as well as programmatic efforts to support student success. Frequent partners may include The Centers for Equity Community and Leadership (CECL), Residential Education, the Graduate Life Office, Financial Aid Office, and R&D Housing Assignments;
- Delivers targeted support to first-generation, low-income, and former foster youth students navigating basic needs and academic challenges, and serve as the liaison between the Dean of Students Office and the First Generation and/or Low-Income Student Success Center (FLISSC), holding office hours and supporting programming and student support efforts in both offices;
- Manage the Dean of Students basic needs pantry, helping to provide students with food and personal care items to meet short-term needs and to connect with long-term assistance through university and/or social service connections;
- Administer the Dean of Students Office Student Emergency Fund and document all transactions accordance with university policy and processes, collaborating closely with the First Generation and/or Low-Income Student Success Center (FLISSC) and the Financial Aid Office (FAO);
- Proactively identify students at risk of unmet basic needs and engage them with available support and resources, while advocating on their behalf with campus offices and services to ensure access to critical resources and remove barriers to academic success;
- Design, implement, and evaluate programming that fosters community, belonging, and resilience for students facing basic needs challenges, including housing, food security (e.g., SNAP/Cal Fresh), childcare, and support for logistical needs such as winter travel;
- Research, develop, and continuously maintain a directory of campus and community basic needs resources for students, promoting awareness of and access to university aid programs (e.g., Financial Aid Office, the Opportunity Fund, Grant-in-Aid), social services (e.g., Cal Fresh), and other resources relevant to individual student needs;
- Coordinate outreach and resources for students following major incidents such as natural disasters or other major incidents in a student's home community;
- Document all student support and interventions in the case management database in a timely manner; make appropriate referrals to Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), the SHARE Title IX and Title VI Office, Confidential Support Team, etc. to ensure continuity of care on a case-by-case basis;
- Track, evaluate, and report on the effectiveness of interventions and programs, using data, assessment, and other collection methods to ensure continuous improvement, demonstrate measurable impact on student success, and inform outreach, education, and campus well-being initiatives;
- Provide administrative support for database and record-keeping in the Dean of Students Office, overseeing documentation of case management interventions in a timely manner; and
