Road Maintenance Laborer - Temp

Job Summary

This position participates in the repair and maintenance of Borough roads and streets. Work is performed and duties are carried out in accordance with established policies, procedures, and Borough core values:

Temporary Assignment
:
This is a 6‑month temporary (summer) assignment expected to work 40 hours a week. The anticipated schedule is Monday – Friday from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm with a 30‑minute lunch.

Pay Grade: E1 – DOE

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• One (1) year of experience in a similar position, sufficient to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position.
• Preferred experience includes: being an experienced driver who is knowledgeable of the MSB road system. Additional skills and/or experience include: the ability to take direction and familiarity with hand tools and related equipment.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alaska for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Must successfully pass a pre‑employment drug screen, background check and physical.
• Driving duty requirement: If assigned driving duties/responsibilities, candidate must be at least 19 years of age with one (1) year of driving experience.

• Assists with repairs and installs street signs.
• May operate a steam boiler to thaw frozen culverts and prevent glaciations and flooding; repairs and replaces culverts.
• Conducts road striping operations.
• Operates pumps to alleviate flooding conditions.
• Operates brushing equipment; removes trees and tree limbs from roadways.
• May operate street sweeping equipment.
• Operates snow removal and plowing equipment.
• Assists with repairs of asphalt and gravel surfaces.
• Installs traffic control devices and flags traffic at worksites.
• Transports tools, equipment and supplies to work sites.
• Performs preventative maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
• Performs related duties.

The Supplemental Benefits System (SBS) is in lieu of Social Security and is mandatory. An employee contributes at 6.13% of gross wages, matched by the Borough (6.13%), on the present wage base of $176,100.

Employees assigned driving duties/responsibilities, must be at least 19 years of age with one (1) year of driving experience. If assigned driving duties, can you meet those parameters?
