The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 3 (NCI Area Research Biologist) located in Palmer, Alaska. This position serves as the area research biologist for Northern Cook Inlet. Based in the Palmer office, this position leads all research activities related to salmon and resident species within the Division.

Key responsibilities include planning, supervising, evaluating, and conducting research to assess stock status for all salmon species, as well as providing in‑season data analysis and interpretation to support management of area sport fisheries.

The incumbent will supervise one Fishery Biologist 2, one Fishery Biologist 1, and up to ten seasonal technicians. The role also offers substantial opportunities for fieldwork in remote locations.

This position is based in Palmer, Alaska in the beautiful Mat‑Su valley. The duties offer a mix of office and field work and include interactions with the public and other management agencies. When not out on the beautiful lakes and rivers of southcentral Alaska, you will be in an office setting working on all aspects of project planning, data analysis, report writing, and frequently attending professional and public meetings which may require some travel.

We are looking for an individual with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• Experience assessing fish populations using technical methods such as sonar, radiotelemetry, weirs, aerial surveys, hydroacoustic tagging, and statistical modeling.
• Experience training and mentoring biologists and technicians in sampling techniques, data collection, and modern fishery data analysis methods.
• Ability to communicate complex data analyses to colleagues, stakeholders, professional organizations and the Board of Fisheries.
• Experience with Microsoft Office applications (specifically Excel, Word, and Power
  
  BI), common statistical programs such as R, ArcGIS, and database systems.
• Experience analyzing biological data and implementing results to inform fisheries management. Examples include, but aren’t limited to, run forecasting, population trend analyses, and escapement goal analyses.

A valid driver’s license is required.

This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition. First Aid/CPR certification.

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management; AND one year of full performance professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 2, Fish Culturist 2, Wildlife Biologist 2, Habitat Biologist 2, or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
