Full salary ranges:

  • Maintenance Worker I: $25.95 - $33.10
  • Maintenance Worker II: $28.60 - $36.50

Expected hiring ranges:

  • Maintenance Worker I: $25.95 - $28.60
  • Maintenance Worker II: $28.60 - $31.53

Join Our Team as an Aquatics Maintenance Worker I/II!

The City of Palmdale is seeking a skilled and motivated individual to join our dynamic Aquatics Maintenance team. This role supports the maintenance of our four municipal pools, one splashpad, and Dry Town Water Park (two water slides, towers, a lazy river, and an interactive aquatic play structure). As a Maintenance Worker II, you will help ensure our facilities are clean, chemically balanced, safe, and comfortable for guests of all ages.

Characteristics

Maintenance Worker I – Entry‑level class focusing on routine, repetitive duties performed according to established procedures. Incumbents receive close supervision during initial assignments and gradually work more independently.

Maintenance Worker II – Journeyman level performed under general supervision. Requires specific experience and less supervision. Positions are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from Maintenance Worker I or prior related experience.

Essential Duties
  • Oversee and inspect the work of contract maintenance workers; document daily activities and update relevant staff.
  • Inspect assignment areas for safety, appearance, and vandalism; ensure contract staff complete work properly.
  • Perform installation, maintenance, repair, and construction duties related to assignment.
  • Conduct plumbing, concrete, carpentry, and basic electrical repairs.
  • Service heating and air conditioning units.
  • Paint City buildings and facilities.
  • Inspect pool and aquatic facilities for safety; perform water quality testing, adjust treatment processes, and maintain water quality.
  • Maintain and remove trees and stumps; perform weed abatement and vegetation control.
  • Operate power equipment: weed whips, hedgers, chainsaws, gas blowers, tractors.
  • Perform herbicide and rodent abatement duties; inventory and store chemicals.
  • Conduct street and traffic painting, striping, and sign fabrication.
  • Remove graffiti using pressure washers or paint methods; document locations.
  • Perform block wall restoration, sidewalk and driveway repair, and utility enclosure pad removal.
  • Inspect and maintain storm drainage components.
  • Remove trash and debris from roadways; set up traffic control for safe work zones.
  • Clean and clear park grounds, structures, and parkways; set up park facilities for special events.
  • Install, maintain, and repair irrigation facilities; backflow prevention devices.
  • Plant and maintain trees, shrubs, and color spots; clear sites of weeds.
  • Operate maintenance vehicles, equipment, hand tools; occasionally operate larger equipment under supervision.
  • Perform a variety of maintenance tasks related to construction and repair of facilities.
  • Maintain records of activities; inventory and order supplies within guidelines.
  • Apply safe work practices; clean and care for tools, chemicals, and equipment.
  • Assist other department crews; respond to emergency and on‑call situations.
  • Perform related work as required.
Experience & Training / Licenses and Certifications

Maintenance Worker I

  • Education:

    High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Experience:

    One year of maintenance or repair work for an agency, company, or organization.

Maintenance Worker II

  • Training:
    High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Experience:

    Two years of maintenance or repair work for an agency, company, or organization; OR one year as a Maintenance Worker I with the City of Palmdale.

Licenses/Certifications:

Valid California driver’s license and ability to be insured with the City’s carrier.

When assigned to Aquatics Maintenance, must become a Los Angeles County Certified Swimming Pool Service Technician within 6 months of hire. Current certification preferred.

Maintenance Worker I – Knowledge Of

  • Common landscaping chemicals, tools, and methods.
  • Basic laboring and maintenance work practices.
