Overview
Under the direction of the site administration or designee, this position supports student achievement by assisting in maintaining standards of behavior and discipline among students at District schools to help teachers stay focused on classroom instruction; offer prevention and early intervention services that supports the behavioral health and well-being of students, and support students in cultural, linguistic, and age-appropriate services, with the ability to refer and link to higher levels of care as needed.
DistinguishingCharacteristics
This classification is certified and in the Social Service Assistant series. Employees within this classification are distinguished from the Student Interventionist class by the level of education and certification attained, and performance of a full range of duties as assigned, to assist with providing services to meet the behavioral, wellness, and educational needs of students. Positions in this class are normally filled by advancement from the Student Interventionist level, or when filled from the outside, require prior related experience and appropriate certification.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Work with small groups or classrooms focused on wellness promotion and education (e.g., building positive relationships, bullying prevention, nutrition and exercise in relation to behavioral health, check-in/check-out).
- Serve as a campus resource to students, staff and parents in identifying particular problems and finding solutions to resolve conflicts/distractions that interfere with instruction and learning.
- Advise youth on positive ways to manage conflict and model positive alternative strategies for interaction with each other and school personnel.
- Intervene to prevent confrontations and unsafe activities between and among students in order to prevent lost instructional time.
- Facilitate communication with other professionals providing support and care to children and youth, including connecting individuals to licensed providers so all care team members work together and operate at the top of their license or certification.
- Attend and participate in, as needed, relevant school-wide meetings and events.
- Encourage students to develop and maintain regular school attendance, observe school grooming and dress guidelines, dedication to good study habits and respect for fellow students and faculty.
- Work both in individual and small group settings with at-risk and intentional non-learners to discuss issues that are affecting academic achievement and that are counter-productive to achieving positive educational outcomes.
- Comply with confidentiality, licensing, and legal requirements, as well as the District's code of ethics.
- Perform other related duties, as assigned.
Experience: Two years’ experience working with problem youth in educational, rehabilitation, social, or violence prevention programs.
Education: Associate’s degree or higher in one of the following:
Social Work;
Human Services;
Addiction Studies;
Child Development/Early Intervention;
Psychology; or Sociology.
- Wellness Coach Certification through the California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI)
- The availability of private transportation or the ability to obtain transportation between job sites and training locations.
- Ability to be covered under the District property/liability insurance
