The full salary range for this position is as follows:
Program Leader I - $19.42 to $21.40. Expected hiring range is as follows: $19.42 to $20.38.

The City of Palmdale is hiring multiple part-time/seasonal employees to assist with programming across the Parks and Recreation Department. Under the supervision and leadership of the Recreation Supervisor, Recreation Coordinator, and Senior Program leaders, these positions will assist with planning and facilitating recreation activities for children and adults and provide support to full-time Parks and Recreation staff. These positions may work up to 40 hours per week during peak season but are based on programming needs.
The final candidate must be able to work flexible work hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

The positions are part-time and unbenefited. Hours are limited and vary from position to position based on various programming schedules. Additional information regarding hours will be discussed in the interview process.
Program Leader I
This entry level class of the series is distinguished from level II by routine and repetitive duties performed according to established procedures. Incumbents are closely supervised in their initial assignments. As they gain experience, incumbents will work more independently in routine work.
Essential and other important responsibilities and functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:- Assist in the planning, coordinating and conduct of recreation activities for children and young adults at parks, community centers, school fun centers and camps; implement activities such as games, contests, arts and crafts, skits and sports.
- Ensure the set-up and safety of facilities for planned activities; may prepare rooms for use by patrons; set up and take down tables, chairs, and related equipment.
- Oversee the use of the facility, insuring patrons conform to the established policies and procedures; ensure security of the facility at the end of the day.
- Report facility maintenance concerns and maintain adequate supplies and inventory by reporting needs.
- Assist in special events and other recreational activities.
- Assist in researching and preparing creative recreational activities; assist in maintaining records of activities and preparing reports on programs, accidents, discipline problems and staff meetings as necessary.
- Disseminate program publicity as required.
- Attend meetings, training sessions, and conferences; assist in making presentations and provide information regarding programs.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:- Some experience in working with children or young adults in a recreational environment is highly desirable.
- Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
Must be at least 16 years of age by July 1 of the current year.
Knowledge of:- Basic methods, procedures and practices of recreational activities.
- Principles and practices of supervising children and young adults.
- Principles and practices of coordinating activities.
- Safe work practices.
- Learn the principles and objectives of recreational activities.
- Deal effectively with a variety of groups and individuals.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Physical Demands:
- Mobility: frequent standing for extended periods of time, bending, stooping, sitting, walking on uneven ground as required by programs.
