THE POSITIONThis position works in the Public Works Department, performing a variety of semi‑skilled and skilled work in the maintenance, construction, repair, and installation of sidewalks, streets, curbs, sewers, signs, structures, and storm drains. Operates maintenance and repair tools and performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES- Provides courteous and expeditious customer service to the general public and City department staff.
- Sets up traffic control devices and performs flagging functions in work zones; ensures a safe working environment according to established safety guidelines.
- Operates a variety of heavy and light equipment, hand, and small power tools, including trucks, skip loaders, water trucks, light rollers, backhoes, dump trucks, airless spray equipment, shovels, rakes, and related equipment.
- Performs minor maintenance and adjustments on equipment; performs preventative maintenance procedures on equipment used.
- Assist other crews in the performance of their responsibilities as necessary.
- Routinely adheres to and maintains a positive attitude towards City and Department goals.
- Performs painting of traffic control markings and curbs; operates street striping and stencil equipment; paints crosswalks, stop bars, stop signs, lane markers, center lines, parking spaces, curbs, and traffic islands; installs raised traffic bars, guard rails, and reflectors; replaces defective or missing traffic controls.
- Removes, repairs, replaces, or installs street signs and traffic signs; cleans and maintains existing signs; trims vegetation that presents safety hazards; assists in the fabrication of signs as necessary.
- Operates a variety of equipment, including stencil truck, parking lot striper, and marking removal equipment.
- Performs curb, gutter, and sidewalk maintenance duties; breaks up paved surfaces; sets forms; mixes, pours, spreads, and finishes concrete.
- Performs heavy manual labor, loading and unloading dirt, rocks, sand, gravel, and other materials at assigned job sites.
- Cleans and maintains streets and parking lots.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum requirements must be clearly demonstrated on the application to be considered. Experience requirements must be demonstrated in the "Work Experience" section of the application. (One year of work experience is the equivalent of 12 months of full‑time work.)
ExperienceTwo (2) years of experience in performing skilled manual labor in the repair and construction of streets, sidewalks, and gutters, and the operation of such equipment as jackhammers, backhoes, tractors, and dump trucks is required.
TrainingHigh School Diploma or equivalent education is required.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATES- Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment, a valid California Class B driver’s license with a tanker endorsement is required.
- Possession of an appropriate, valid Work Zone Traffic Control Safety Certificate by the Department of Transportation and/or IMSA is preferred.
- Incumbents are enrolled in the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice Program and must meet Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). must successfully complete, or have completed, the necessary pre‑employment/placement background investigation and physical and drug.
The work environment includes exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, electrical and radiant energy, high voltage, confined spaces, uneven surfaces, underground, and heights. Tasks may require walking, standing, sitting, heavy, moderate, or light lifting and carrying; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling; climbing; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
