The Monitor Tech (Health Unit Coordinator II) is responsible for maintaining supplies and equipment, performing non-clinical nursing tasks, and performing clerical and receptionist duties for a nursing unit. Access to demographic information and limited Patient Health Information as related to job function.
Responsibilities- Monitors and interprets accurately cardiac rhythms of patients on telemetric equipment. Informs licensed caregiver of dysrhythmia as they occur.
- Maintains integrity of the telemetry system. Reports all malfunctions or needed adjustments of equipment.
- Documents all EKG rhythm strips with patient room number, name, date, and time obtained.
- Ensures that all alarms are on at all times with the appropriate parameters.
- Maintains and updates knowledge of basic arrhythmias.
- May perform clerical and other duties as requested.
- Obtains information and interprets information in terms of the patient’s needs.
- Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development and understands the range of treatment needed as appropriate to the ages of the patients served.
- Demonstrates knowledge of electrocardiographic monitoring and responds appropriately to electrocardiographic rhythms.
- Answers questions and directs visitors and the patients’ family members in a courteous manner; assists physicians and hospital personnel with locating patients and charts.
- Follows unit guidelines for communication and screening calls; answers incoming telephone calls within four rings and refers calls as needed.
- Assembles patient records within 30 minutes of transfer and maintains current and previous records per unit policies/procedures.
- Maintains medical records in the designated area and obtains chart copies for transfer to another facility before discharge.
- Maintains the integrity of the discharge chart for medical records and enters orders correctly into the CERNER System in a timely manner.
- Follows CERNER downtime procedures and signs, times, and dates all transcribed orders; notifies nurse of any STAT orders when written.
- Documents allergies at admission and ongoing; assists in clarifying illegible or confusing orders to facilitate patient follow-up.
- Demonstrates accurate rhythm interpretation, notifies nurse of cardiac changes, maintains alarm integrity, and obtains rhythm strips during Code Blue as needed.
- Participates in unit effectiveness activities, attends staff meetings or reads and signs staff meeting minutes; participates in unit quality improvement activities as assigned.
- Gives end-of-shift report regarding pending issues to oncoming HUC or appropriate staff, and uses computer systems for transfer, discharge census, reports, and printing functions.
- Keeps patient computer screens updated; obtains preliminary reports as needed; transports items to/from lab, pharmacy, or other departments; obtains emergency equipment as needed.
