Chance Light, a division of the nation’s leading provider of alternative and special education programs for children and young adults, is seeking a School Counselor to join our award-winning Special Education team in Pacifica, CA or San Jose, CA. This dynamic, student‑centered position offers limitless potential for personal and professional satisfaction.
Responsibilities- Provide individual and group counseling, including crisis intervention, to support students’ academic, social, and emotional success.
- Conduct interviews with students, families, and school personnel to assess social, emotional, and behavioral adjustment.
- Maintain regular contact with parents/guardians to inform them of student progress and home‑school dynamics.
- Develop, update, and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and Positive Behavior Intervention Plans (PBIP) in compliance with all regulations.
- Attend and facilitate IEP team meetings and other collaborative meetings as needed.
- Coordinate case management functions, including parent meetings, emergency transportation, disciplinary actions, and outside therapist referrals.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and service providers to find effective solutions to learning and behavior problems.
- Conduct monthly climate data reviews of classroom staff implementing IEP goals and PBIP strategies.
- Provide guidance and training to teachers on classroom schedules, data systems, and student transition plans.
- Serve as a role model for behavior analytic, data‑based decision making, and positive reinforcement methods.
- Master’s degree or higher in educational counseling, therapy, social work, or a closely related field.
- State and district licensing or credential requirements met (LMFT, LMHC, LPC, LPCC, LEP, NCSC, LCSW, LMSW, DCSW, LCSW‑R, C‑SSWS or equivalent).
- Licensed in or currently obtaining a special education credential highly preferred.
- Certification in crisis management training.
- Experience with special education services, especially students with autism, emotional disturbance, or challenging behaviors.
- Proficiency in applied behavior analysis (ABA), PBIS, effective teaching strategies, classroom management, data‑based decision making, and functional behavior assessment.
- Success in developing and implementing treatment plans for diverse student populations.
- Strong oral and written communication, curriculum instruction, conflict resolution, multitasking, and problem‑solving skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, database entry, and basic office equipment.
