Steel Foreman role at St. Johns Ship Building, Inc.

Operations are conducted in a storm‑protected 100‑acre inland campus in Palatka, 30 miles southwest of Jacksonville on the St. Johns River that provides direct access to the Atlantic Ocean. Position

Summary

The Steel Foreman oversees all functions pertaining to the steel welding department. Ensures the manufacturing process remains smooth and efficient by organizing workflows and monitoring staff. Plans, directs, or coordinates the work activities and resources in the welding department necessary for new construction and repairs in accordance with cost, quality, and quantity specifications. Supervises (including hiring, orienting, training, evaluating, and discharging) the welders to ensure they receive the training and support required for optimal performance.

Maintains up‑to‑date supervision records on each employee. Completes all staff evaluations and any required staff disciplinary actions as requested and on time. Ensures that the selection of employees is administered without regard to race, religion, color, veteran's status, national origin, citizenship, sex, age, or non‑job‑related disability and consistent with affirmative action objectives and EEO laws. Responsible for ensuring excellent customer service and performance by subordinate staff.

Responsibilities
  • Directs and coordinates the steel welding department of St. Johns Ship Building's projects.
  • Meets or exceeds the production deadlines for the steel welding department.
  • Ensures that the steel welding department budget meets or exceeds goals.
  • Monitors the production schedule, prioritizes work and adjusts staffing and production to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Notifies the Production Manager when it is necessary to outsource work.
  • Coordinates the flow of raw materials to ensure continuous production.
  • Requisition s the purchase of supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product.
  • Coordinates maintenance on welding and related equipment as needed.
  • Schedules employees in his/her area of responsibility, approves time off and ensures proper staffing.
  • Inspects fit‑up and tank shells.
  • Coordinates production with 2nd Shift and Weekend Supervisors.
  • Operates automated welding equipment.
  • Layouts and plasma cuts.
  • Welds airtight, watertight, fuel‑tight.
  • Is able to read blueprints and weld schedules.
  • Works with inspection authorities as well as in‑house QC.
  • Detects faulty operation of equipment or defective materials.
  • Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Operates manual or semi‑automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, flux‑cored arc, plasma arc, shielded metal arc, resistance welding, and submerged arc welding.
  • Analyzes engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, sketches, work orders, and material safety data sheets to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.
  • Determines required equipment and welding methods, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.
  • And miscellaneous duties may be required.
Qualifications
  • Welding Certification, either AWS or ABS required.
  • Five or more years of welding experience.
  • Two or more years of supervisor experience.
  • High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Microsoft Office Suite experience required.
