Community Development Summer Intern

The Village of Palatine Department of Community Development is seeking a motivated and detail‑orientated Summer Intern to support the Community Development Department. This position offers hand‑on experience in municipal code enforcement and community services within a professional local government environment.

Job Description

This Summer Intern will assist the Community Development Department with a variety of duties related to the enforcement of the Village's Code of Ordinances, including property maintenance, zoning and other day‑to‑day departmental operations. The position reports to the Environmental Health Field Director.

Essential Job Functions
  • Conduct site visits to identify potential code violations, including issues related to property maintenance, zoning, nuisances, refuse and recycling issues
  • Document code violations and prepare written notices
  • Assist with preparation for adjudication hearings
  • Participate in planning and conducting a community recycling event
  • Provide information to the public regarding Village codes and departmental services
  • Respond to inquiries related to issued notices
Physical Demands
  • Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments
  • Sufficient mobility to visit sites, including walking, standing, bending, squatting and climbing
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 25 pounds
Education, Experience and Licenses
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be enrolled as a full‑time student in a college or university for Fall 2026
  • Coursework in Public Health, Planning & Zoning, Code Enforcement, Public Administration, or a related field
  • Possession of a valid Illinois driver's license is required
Salary

$17 per hour.

Hours

Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. 35 hours per week.

Employment Duration

3 months (summer 2026, starting early to mid‑May).
