Job Responsibilities

A deckhand, under the direction of the mate, will perform any combination of the following duties:

  • Handle lines to moor the vessel to dock, locks, or another vessel.
  • Rig towing lines.
  • Sweep decks using a broom, brush, or mop.
  • Stand lookout watches while the vessel is underway.
  • Load or unload materials and supplies from docks or other vessels.
  • Paint decks and superstructure of the vessel using a chipper, scraper, and/or brush, paint roller, or spray gun.
  • Lubricate machinery and equipment.
  • Splice and repair wire cables and ropes using hand tools.
  • Fuel equipment.
  • Examine cables that hold barges and vessels in tow and, using a ratchet, tighten cables to ensure barges and vessel are snug.
  • Check barges and barge void tanks for leakage or damage.
