OverviewThe Controls Technician ensures that all automation throughout the plant performs as expected and automation maintenance issues are resolved efficiently and effectively in order to support maintenance and production. Individual programmers may have specialization areas (IT, electrical, etc.).
Minimum Qualifications- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- 3-5 yrs. programming knowledge;
Microsoft Office Suite and other applicable programs
- Some post-secondary education;
Associates or Bachelor’s degree; PLC Schooling through an accredited school such as George Brown college or equivalent experience - Knowledge of Allen Bradley 5000 series PLC software;

Willing to work overtime, answer calls and work on other shifts as necessary; excellent understanding/knowledge of PLC’s, HMI’s Ladder logic software/programming and SCADA systems; familiar with hydraulic, pneumatic, combustion, electrical and mechanical systems; meticulous attention to detail and strong research and problem solving abilities; good math, reading and blueprint reading skills; excellent communication, customer service and interaction skills; high energy level and the ability to handle several urgent tasks at once
Key Responsibilities- Develop and maintain automation programs, systems and processes, according to company expectations to ensure safe, fast and efficient completion of finished customer product
- Develop, maintain, report and display key indicators and metrics, according to Production needs to ensure accurate information is correct and available to the stakeholders
- Develop, maintain and apply speciality knowledge in required and applicable areas such as IT interfacing (servers, technical infrastructure, PC’s), report analyzing and/or industrial maintenance projects, according to company expectations to ensure processes are improved and maintained to a high standard
- Foster an environment where employees will willingly make extra effort to exceed goals and look for opportunities to improve our processes and develop a lean, responsive and knowledgeable workforce
- Respond to and resolve breakdowns, discrepancies or non-conforming machine performance based on departmental procedure in order for the Production or Maintenance teams to make corrections or adjustments to processes appropriately
- Apply and provide accountability of all safety rules, participation in safety practices, LOTO procedures and wearing of PPE according to company standards and government regulations in order to facility a safe working environment. Assist management with communication and compliance of company strategic initiatives
- Other duties as assigned.
- High frequency of visual monitoring of production processes
- High frequency of visual monitoring for quality defects. High frequency of visual monitoring of HMI panels and PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) driven panels
- Regular frequency of visual monitoring of scrap conditions/types
- Frequent data entry of necessary information
- Frequent visual and audio monitoring of processes
- Low frequency of hot metal work
- Low frequency of confined space entry
- Low frequency lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Low frequency use of forklift/mobile equipment; physical demands include low frequency lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, walking, and reaching into/working in tight areas.
- Low frequency climbing over 4 feet.
- Low frequent operation of overhead crane
- Wearing of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment, as required
- Must be able to work a 12-hour continental shift.
- Mostly Indoor work with constant exposure to outside elements; some outdoor work
- Long-term exposure to high and low temperatures
