Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the collection, processing, and packaging of all hazardous waste, including legal classification, required packaging, and proper labeling of all containers.
  • Maintain high quality control and detail orientation on highly regulated USAP hazardous wastes.
  • Learn and follow all applicable ACA, EPA, NRC, IMDG, DOT, State rules and regulations regarding hazardous wastes being shipped.
  • Complete all documentation and tracking to a high degree of accuracy.
  • Perform classification qualitative testing on items (pH testing, flash point testing, etc.).
  • Operate an articulating forklift safely.
  • Conduct quality checks on all shipping containers and correct discrepancies immediately.
  • Assist the Solid Waste Department as needed.
  • Supply manual labor (shoveling) for several hours if required.
  • Use drum dollies, cargo straps, banding, shovels, pallet jacks, power tools, and other tools regularly.
  • Engage in constant physical activity, including bending, lifting, and carrying 50–70 lbs, reaching, and gripping.
  • Adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures and tasking responsibilities of the Waste Department.
  • Work effectively within a team of diverse personalities.
  • Demonstrate self-motivation in a physically challenging and atypical outdoor work environment (approximately 70% outdoor tasking).
  • Maintain flexibility and a positive attitude in a dynamic, fast‑paced work setting.
  • Support Operations Division metrics as provided by the supervisor.
  • Contribute to the achievement of ASC metrics, directly or indirectly, through work activities.
  • Comply with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements and goals; provide documentation as necessary.
  • Work toward ASC goals and contractual commitments.
  • Maintain a safe workplace and prioritize safety above all.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Report to the Program Manager.
Requirements
  • College degree (or two additional years of experience will substitute).
  • Strong computer software experience.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs consistently and wear a respirator.
  • Valid driver's license and passport.
  • Ability to stand for up to 12 hours daily.
  • Capability to lift the safety regulation maximum and perform functions requiring repetitive motion.
  • Pass a physical qualification assessment.
  • Ability to deploy to Antarctica for the duration of the contract.
Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of hazardous materials shipping/characterization or reporting experience, or two years of environmental remediation.
  • One year of high school chemistry or equivalent.
  • One quarter of college general chemistry.
  • College degree in chemistry or environmental science.
  • OSHA HazWOPER 40‑hour certification, current.
  • Familiarity with power tools and machinery.
  • Experience operating equipment.
Certifications and Licensing
  • Valid driver's license and passport valid for six months after the end of the contract.
  • US citizenship or permanent residency required.

Additional Employment Requirements
  • Successful completion of a Tier 1 Elevated Background Investigation (EBI) prior to deployment.
  • Completion of online and written forms, fingerprint cards, and provision of additional details requested by NSF Personnel Security.
