We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join our Impact and Shock Mechanics research group at the Department of Engineering Science (Begbroke Science Park). The post is funded by ATi/Innovate UK and Rolls Royce and is fixed-term to June 2029.

You will join a world‑leading programme advancing experimental and numerical methods to predict the impact performance of composite materials. The role focuses on developing cutting‑edge simulation tools and contributing to bespoke high‑rate experiments within Oxford’s Impact Engineering Laboratory.

Responsibilities
  • Advancing numerical modelling methodologies, including AI‑assisted surrogate models
  • Designing and conducting impact experiments for model validation
  • Developing research proposals and leading individual research projects
  • Analysing complex data and generating original research ideas
  • Publishing in high‑impact journals and presenting at international conferences
  • Contributing to group strategy, funding applications, and collaborative projects
  • Liaising with funding bodies and representing the research group externally
  • Supporting laboratory capability, protocols, and scientific guidance within the team
Qualifications
  • A PhD/DPhil (or near completion) in Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field
  • Strong expertise in composite materials, their deformation and failure, and finite element modelling for impact applications
  • Experience with high‑rate experimental methods and CAD/solid‑modelling tools
  • A strong publication record and experience presenting to external audiences
  • Excellent project‑management skills and the ability to work independently
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines and with external partners
