Are you a qualified registered nurse aspiring to work with a dynamic team in the day surgery setting? We are looking for an enthusiastic senior staff nurse/deputy sister to join our team. To be responsible for providing skilled clinical leadership and support for the Day Surgery Unit Nurses and to participate in the assessment of patient care needs and to implement and maintain the agreed standards of care.
You will need to be a forward-thinking, motivated professional nurse who is committed to providing a high standard of holistic care and can demonstrate a caring commitment to working in partnership with patients and their families. The successful applicant will assist in delivering high-quality care, ensuring an effective flow of patients. The post holder will support the ward manager, ensuring staff have an annual appraisal and appropriate training.
You will assist the ward manager with other managerial duties in their absence. You will assist the ward manager to provide clinical leadership, monitor nursing standards and ensure compliance with the NMC standards.
- Planning, delivering, and evaluating patient care
- Managing pre- and postoperative teams within DS
- Implementing local protocols and standards with the multidisciplinary team
- Managing resources within the department
- Participating in clinical trials and research
- Deputizing for the Day Surgery Ward Manager when required
- Providing expert clinical advice to nurses and members of the multidisciplinary team
- Assessment, planning, and provision of nursing advice; carrying out specialist nursing procedures
- Providing clinical supervision to staff and students; undertaking quality improvement projects, research, or leading clinical audits
- Ensuring safety and well‑being of service users, promoting dignity and human rights through person‑centred care principles
- Preparing equipment according to patient needs; implementing and evaluating care plans
- Monitoring and assessing patient condition; responding to changes and adjusting care plan
- Handing over and transferring responsibility of care to colleagues, ensuring appropriate information is relayed
- Supporting and reassuring patients and relatives during pre‑ and post‑operative period
- Maintaining accurate patient records using EPR
- Managing drug administration, security, and control, aligning with national policies
- Allocating medication, including transfusion of blood, and ensuring accurate administration
- Assessing and recognizing emergencies in the Day Surgery Unit
- Advocating for patients within the DSU to ensure a patient‑oriented approach and compliance with CQC outcomes
- Ensuring high‑quality clinical care, good patient experience, and respect for cultural and religious beliefs
- Providing leadership, support, and guidance to staff in delivering individualised care
- Maintaining a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff
- Ensuring sensitive records are stored appropriately
- Promoting general health education for patients and relatives
- Responding to untoward incidents and reporting as needed to the Day Surgery manager
- Supporting and enabling patients and carers to make informed decisions about treatments
- Minimising risk of cross‑infection and ensuring safe disposal of body fluids
- Effective communication within the Day Surgery Unit
- Promoting high‑quality clinical care and development of the Day Surgery Unit through evidence‑based practice
- Facilitating high‑quality specialist service via monitoring and audit, and other quality initiatives
- Leading key developments to promote patient‑focused services
- Attending multidisciplinary team meetings; setting, monitoring and reviewing care standards; initiating corrective actions
- Intervening in unsafe environments and reporting to the ward manager
- Providing leadership role‑model; offering support or advice when necessary
- Monitoring and ordering stocks and supplies, rotating stock as needed
- Managing the Day Surgery team: sickness absence, performance investigations, untoward incident reporting, and appraisals
- Liaising with the Day Surgery Manager for effective communication systems
- Preparing staff rots, ensuring adequate skill mix to meet department needs
