The Oxford Sleep & Ventilation Service is a tertiary centre of excellence, supporting over 20,000 patients on Continuous Positive Airways Pressure (CPAP) and around 1,500 on long‑term ventilation and airway clearance needs. We are seeking a Specialist Respiratory Physiotherapist to join our multidisciplinary team in delivering safe and effective care to patients in Oxfordshire and surrounding counties.
Main duties of the job
- Perform specialist assessment of patients, including those with highly complex presentations, and formulate appropriate treatment plans, working autonomously.
- Provide care across a variety of settings including outpatient, inpatient and domiciliary outreach.
- Supervise, teach and appraise senior and junior physiotherapists, physiotherapy students and other MDT members.
- Assist the Lead Specialist Physiotherapist in the operational management and overall development of the service, deputising as required.
- Participate in evidence‑based projects, assist in the implementation of changes within the service, and set and monitor standards of practice.

Clinical:
Be professionally and legally responsible for all aspects of own professional activities.Undertake specialist assessment of patients as an autonomous practitioner, including those with highly complex presentations; use clinical reasoning, evidence‑based practice and advanced expertise to determine appropriate interventions.Interpret and analyse clinical and non‑clinical facts to form accurate diagnoses in a wide range of highly complex conditions.Formulate accurate prognoses and recommend best courses of intervention, developing and implementing comprehensive treatment plans.Be responsible for own patient care plans and provide specialist advice and guidance to junior team members and other health care professionals.Continuously reassess patients to progress treatments effectively.Be highly competent in assessing a wide range of cardiopulmonary conditions and in situations where evidence is conflicting.Be highly skilled in assessment and treatment within the specialty of sleep and ventilation, including non‑invasive and invasive ventilation, advanced cough management, airway clearance strategies and CPAP.Be highly competent in selecting, setting up and adjusting a range of medical devices used for sleep and ventilation patients and remain up‑to‑date with new devices and technology.Demonstrate highly competent IT skills to analyse, interpret and respond to data relating to patient care.Demonstrate physical ability to carry out physiotherapy assessment and interventions including manual therapy techniques and therapeutic handling.Demonstrate dexterity, coordination and palpatory skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients.Provide domiciliary care as a lone practitioner using expert skills in assessment, diagnosis and provision of expert treatment in non‑hospital settings.Assess a patient’s capacity to understand and obtain valid, informed consent for treatment; work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity.Communicate complex and sensitive information to patients, carers and other staff, ensuring all team members do likewise.Deal sensitively with distressing or emotional circumstances regarding patient care.Take an active role in health promotion using up‑to‑date knowledge of available support services.Coordinate with other physiotherapists, medical staff, nursing staff, social workers and MDT members regarding patient care.Communicate effectively with all disciplines involved in the patient’s care…
