Overview

We are looking for a dynamic Occupational Therapist to join our diverse team of Allied Health Professionals who work on our dedicated trauma unit. The role will provide the opportunity to gain a wide range of experience and knowledge of Occupational Therapy trauma assessments and treatments and provide the opportunity to work with patients who present with varying degrees of complexity.

As an occupational therapist you will have direct input into the assessment and treatment of adult patients who have experienced trauma or major trauma, which could include fragility fractures, polytrauma, head injury, spinal cord injury, plastic surgery and amputation. You will be delivering evidence-based interventions to facilitate recovery, promote wellbeing and optimise independence as far as reasonably possible in all areas of life.

We are seeking applicants who can adapt quickly to changing work environments and work well within a busy team. You will be expected to be an active member of the multi-disciplinary team and build networks to enable appropriate partnerships with other agencies involved in patient care to both identify and address immediate and ongoing needs, which is essential in a clinical speciality like this.

Interviews conducted face to face. Proposed time slots: 1. 0830 - 0930 2. 0945- 1045  4. 1300- 1400 , To provide a high standard Occupational Therapy service (i.e. safe, patient focussed, effective and evidence-based) in collaboration with other team members to trauma patients at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

  • To undertake assessment, treatment, education and support for Trauma service patients and their carers.
  • This will involve clinical reasoning and autonomous complex decision making using best available evidence.
  • To provide holistic, timely OT intervention to facilitate safe hospital discharge.
  • To be able to justify rationale for provision or non-provision of adaptive equipment, demonstrating its safe use and care to patients, staff and carers. Provide support for junior staff regarding complex issues.
  • To have a day to day responsibility for managing a complex and diverse caseload and co-ordinating safe and effective patient discharge
  • To risk assess and undertake manual handling techniques involving patients and or equipment following appropriate training in line with organisational manual handling policies.
  • To organise, complete and document assessments in patient s homes.
  • To provide occupational therapy treatment and intervention in a wide range of traumatic conditions based on theoretical knowledge and clinical experience.
  • To assist the Trauma Band 7 Occupational Therapist and the Trauma and Orthopaedic Head of Therapies in the day-to-day supervision, education and support of Band 5 Occupational Therapists, Therapy Assistants and Occupational Therapy Students.
  • To assist the Trauma Band 7 Occupational Therapist and the Trauma and Orthopaedic Head of Therapies in the day-to-day delivery of the Trauma Therapy Service.
  • To support junior staff members to effectively manage their clinical caseload.
  • To enable patients to achieve effective coping and self-management skills.
  • To advise patients and carers or other health and social care professionals regarding adaptations to social and physical environments and make relevant referrals and recommendations to meet patient needs for safe hospital discharge.
  • To maintain accurate records on all aspects of occupational therapy intervention in compliance with Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Royal College of Occupational Therapy and NHS guidelines.
  • To evaluate continuously Occupational Therapy intervention and to maintain a high standard of clinical and professional practice at all times.
  • To be able to identify own professional limitations and seek senior advice when appropriate.
  • To be able to provide and receive complex, sensitive, and contentious information such as discussing limitations associated with diagnosis/procedures/prognosis, managing complex discharges and providing appropriate emotional support
  • To comply with data activity recording in accordance with professional and Trust standards.
  • To promote the role of OT through integrated working and explaining role of OT to patient and carers.
  • To participate in the Weekend/Bank Holiday working rota as required.
Communication
  • To communicate effectively both written and verbally at all levels. To identify the need and coordinate multi-disciplinary case conferences as indicated to ensure safe and effective discharges from hospital.
