Overview
The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking two full‑time Consultant Spinal Surgeons – one with an interest in Adult Tumour Surgery and one with an interest in Complex Paediatric Deformity – to join its internationally acclaimed Spinal Surgery Team.
As part of a team of 10–12 consultants, the successful candidates will provide both elective and emergency spinal surgery for the Thames Valley region, delivering inpatient and day‑case operative care, outpatient clinics and a 1‑in‑12 on‑call commitment within a 24/7 service. Sub‑specialty fellowship training is required; consultant experience is desirable but not mandatory.
Responsibilities- Perform spinal tumour and complex adult deformity surgery, and contribute to adult elective and emergency spinal procedures.
- Attend inpatient and day‑case operations, outpatient clinics and participate in a 24/7 on‑call rota (1 in 12).
- Engage in audit, clinical governance and quality improvement activities.
- Collaborate with specialist registrars, spinal fellows, physiotherapy and MDT teams across the Trust.
- Promote and participate in research and educational initiatives within the department.
- FRCS (Orthopaedics) or equivalent.
- Entry on Specialist Register, or within six months of entry.
- Completed appropriate training in spinal surgery including a 1‑year (or 2‑year) spinal fellowship.
- Higher medical degree and further training in microsurgical techniques.
- Broad experience in spinal surgery, including complex adult deformity and tumour procedures.
- Competence in presenting expert clinical opinion on a range of spinal problems, both elective and emergency.
- Experience with spinal trauma, intradural and endoscopic procedures and on‑call duties.
- Consultant‑level expertise of more than five years in complex adult surgical procedures.
- Excellent leadership and teamwork skills.
- Experience of formal and informal teaching contributions.
- Peer‑reviewed publications and evidence of sustained contribution to clinical governance, risk management and audit.
COVID‑19 vaccination is strongly encouraged. While it is not currently a condition of employment, the Trust will check vaccination status of all new starters to manage risks.
