Overview

Clinical Fellow Vascular Surgery at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. Fixed term 12 months starting February 2026, with potential extension by mutual agreement. Closing date: 09 February 2026.

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUHFT) is a major trauma centre and hub for the Thames Valley Vascular Unit (TVVU). The unit delivers a wide range of vascular procedures across its network and supports major trauma services.

The vascular unit undertakes open and complex endovascular procedures and provides specialised services including dissection for complex spinal reconstructions, carotid body tumour service and the supra-regional abdominal sarcoma service.

Main duties of the job

(a) Aims and responsibilities of the post:

To provide vascular surgical experience with emphasis on open vascular surgery and to deliver comprehensive elective and emergency vascular and endovascular surgical experience within a large UK vascular network.

(b) Clinical

To provide approximately 48 hours of vascular surgery cover per week. To work with vascular surgeons based at the John Radcliffe Hospital and across the Thames Valley Vascular Network. Access to at least one full day of elective operating per week plus emergency operating as required. An on-call rota is in place with allocated rest periods/days off.

Monday

am – Clinic (alternate weeks) / RFA list (alternate weeks); pm – Clinic (alternate weeks)

Tuesday

am – Triage clinic (alternate weeks); pm – Triage clinic (alternate weeks)

Wednesday

am – Endovascular list (alternate weeks); pm – Endovascular list (alternate weeks)

Thursday

am – Theatre (alternate weeks); pm – Theatre (alternate weeks)

Friday

am – MDT; pm – Audit

d) Facilities for Study and Training:
Good library facilities are available at The John Radcliffe and other libraries in Central Oxford.

e) Teaching, Audit and Research:
The Fellow may be expected to participate in teaching of junior doctors in vascular surgery and other personnel. Attendance at relevant meetings and participation in audit are expected. There are opportunities for clinical research, and participation is encouraged.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full GMC licence to practice
  • MRCS or equivalent
  • Specialist training in vascular surgery
  • Higher research degree
Experience
  • General training in vascular surgery to specialist level or equivalent
  • Ability to make decisions at registrar level
  • Interest in research with publications
Skills
  • Leadership, organisational, communication, professional and personal skills to undertake the role of clinical fellow in a large teaching hospital and tertiary referral centre
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills in English (spoken and written)
  • Experience of teaching undergraduates and junior trainees
  • Experience of clinical audit and clinical research
  • Knowledge of the NHS organisation and the Government’s modernisation agenda
  • Research publications
  • Driving licence
