Main duties of the job
Prospective cover non-resident on calls, occasional resident shifts to support the resident anaesthetic rota. Dedicated teaching time will be allocated to developing expertise in:
- Echocardiography
- Anaesthesia for cardiothoracic surgical procedures
- Anaesthesia for interventional cardiology procedures
- Critical Care
The post holder may have the opportunity to supplement/replace their Cardiothoracic anaesthesia sessions with other specialities, based on their learning objectives and wishes.

The Trust comprises of four hospitals – the John Radcliffe Hospital
, the Churchill Hospital and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.
Job responsibilities
The successful post holder will be expected to actively participate in developing research, teaching and audit programmes and taking an active part in the clinical governance requirements of the unit. On call duties include working with the Consultant Intensivist on the Cardiothoracic Critical Care to support the resident trainee anaesthetist and cover interventional cardiology emergencies in the catheter laboratory. In addition, the post-holder will work with the on-call Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist to cover all cardiothoracic surgical emergencies.
PersonSpecification Qualifications
- Essential – GMC Full Licence to Practice
- Desirable – Evidence or interest in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia or Critical Care
- Management of complex rotas
- Essential Evidence of team leadership skills to be able to undertake effectively, the role of a Fellow within a large, multi site Teaching Hospital
- Organisational skills to be able to undertake effectively, the role of a Fellow within a large multi site Teaching Hospita.
- Good personal and interpersonal skills
- Good spoken and written English, communication skills should be highly developed
- Desirable Knowledge of the organisation of the NHS and the Government's agenda for its modernisation
- Flexible approach to problem solving.
- Willingness to conduct and/or supervise audit as a fellow
