duties of the job

As a whole‑time consultant in paediatric surgery, you will work primarily from the Surgical Elective Centre and the West Wing at The John Radcliffe Hospital, with an expectation to serve at any of the Trust’s locations. Your responsibilities include providing tertiary paediatric surgical care, managing acute general and neonatal surgery as part of the 1:7.5 acute rota, collaborating closely with paediatric surgery and urology teams, and delivering high‑level care to children and families across the region.

You will also travel to sites such as Horton Hospital, Chipping Norton and Northampton Hospital for theatre sessions and clinics, with appropriate travel time permitted.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical
:
Provide tertiary-level paediatric surgical care and participate in the acute rota. Work with paediatric surgery and urology teams, including nurse specialists, to deliver high-standard care. Travel for theatre sessions and clinics as required.

Teaching/Research
:
Attend teaching programmes for clinical students, junior doctors and in clinical examinations. Contribute to research and be involved in the Trust’s learning activities.

Clinical Governance
:
Participate in clinical audit, effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement, and activities required by the Trust and external accrediting bodies.

Personal and Professional Development
:
Keep up-to-date with relevant practice and demonstrate proficiency to the Trust. Receive professional or study leave at the Trust’s discretion for training, CME courses and other development needs.

Management
:
Operate within the Trust’s statutory and internal management policies, ensuring any changes or resource needs gain prior agreement. Handle administrative duties associated with patient care and clinical service management under the lead clinician’s direction.

Person specification
  • Full UK GMC Registration with License to Practice.
  • Accreditation in Paediatric Surgery and on specialist register, or within 6 months of the AAC.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview) or CESR (within 6 months of interview).
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Paediatric Surgery.
  • Experience of complex gastrointestinal surgery.
  • Competency to perform key paediatric surgical open operations, experience in laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures.
  • Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems.
  • Excellent leadership skills with demonstrated experience leading a clinical team in a teaching hospital.
  • Effective administrative and time‑management skills.
  • Adaptability, resilience and response to changing circumstances.
  • Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training.
  • Higher medical degree (DM, DPhil, PhD).
  • Advanced paediatric laparoscopic skills.
  • Experience of transitional care implementation in adolescent paediatric surgery interface.
  • Evidence of development of neonatal and paediatric surgical protocols.
  • Contribution to protocol development in paediatric surgery, published or evidenced locally.
  • Education qualification or training.
