Job Summary
Memorial Healthcare Department of Public Safety is a 24‑hour public safety department that manages all security operations at Memorial Healthcare. Public Safety Officers maintain order, respond to emergencies, protect people and property, promote community relations, patrol assigned areas, enforce laws, and arrest violators. Officers may also conduct criminal investigations, write reports, interview witnesses, victims and suspects.
Job Responsibilities
- Represent the Health System by providing assistance to patients, staff and visitors.
- Patrol grounds, parking lots, structures and buildings to ensure compliance with policies and laws, reporting violations to a command officer.
- Respond to emergencies, alarms, restraints and medical emergencies.
- Exercise judgment to detain, search,, and use force within legal parameters.
- Complete daily activity reports and detailed incident/research reports.
- Maintain all security equipment and report hazards or risks.
- Handle complaints, lost property, suspicious activity and customer service calls.
- Issue citations for parking, handicap and fire lane violations.
- Report off‑duty contacts, arrests and court orders.
- Know and follow applicable federal, state and local laws and the department’s standards.
- Lead and direct others in emergencies or dangerous incidents.
- Use proactive patrol techniques to ensure safety and conduct community‑based crime prevention.
- Provide visible deterrence to crime and prohibited activities.
- Physically intervene during crises, restrain individuals and maintain compliance.
- Serve as first responder to fire and life‑safety incidents, initiating incident command systems.
- Support investigations, evidence collection, interviews and case management.
- Assist with snow removal, maintenance tasks, escorting personnel and securing property.
- Perform other duties as directed by Public Safety leadership.
Job Responsibilities
- Enforce and abide by MHC policies and guidelines.
- Monitor visitor conduct, confront unauthorized persons and interview as needed.
- Respond to security alert calls.
- Document parking infractions and enforce rules.
- Maintain knowledge of the campus and all facilities.
- Execute written or verbal instructions promptly.
- Write accurate, clear, legible reports.
- Issue /access badges after hours.
- Restrain patients presenting a threat under hospital policy.
- Escort patients, guests and staff as requested.
- Assist maintenance personnel in emergencies.
- Salting walks and snow removal as needed.
- Secure property or equipment to prevent negative outcomes.
- Perform duties at the direction of Public Safety leader or other recognized leaders.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma required;
College degree preferred. - IAHSS Basic and Advanced Certifications preferred;
Must complete Basic certification within the first year. - Concealed Pistol License (CPL) required within 90 days of employment.
- Training and experience in guest relations, security technology, physical security, public safety and/or emergency preparedness preferred.
- On‑the‑job training provided.
- Frequent standing, kneeling, crouching, climbing stairs, bending and lifting up to 20 lbs; may require moving between 20–100 lbs.
- Vision: near and mid‑range acuity as specified.
- Motor coordination required for handling tools and equipment.
- Ability to communicate verbally and listen effectively.
- Proficient in modern physical security equipment and systems (access control, CCTV/VMS, patrol tours, etc.).
- Competent with office, computer, radio and telephone equipment.
- Adapt and maintain focus in fast‑paced, stressful situations.
- Read and interpret policies, regulations and legal documents.
- Execute written and verbal instructions accurately.
- Exercise good judgment in delicate situations.
- Communicate clearly in written and oral form.
- Read information from paper and electronic formats.
- See and hear for work‑related purposes.
- Interact professionally with staff, patients, physicians and the public.
- Act as an ambassador for Memorial Healthcare and demonstrate empathy.
- Remain calm under adversity.
- Communicate openly and honestly.
- Collaborate effectively as a team member.
