Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Nursing Administration, the House Supervisor acts as a resource and leader hospital wide throughout their shift including but not limited to effective distribution and utilization of clinical staff, administrative activities on assigned shift and acting as a liaison and representative of hospital leadership outside typical business hours. The Supervisor strives for superior performance by consistently providing a product or service to leadership and staff that is recognized as ultimately contributing to the patient and family experience and both recognizes and demonstrates understanding of patient and family centered care.

Primary

Job Responsibilities
  • Directs and coordinates patient care activities on his/her shift.
  • Identifies problems or potential problems on units and facilitates solutions to resolve problems.
  • Acts as a resource person regarding patient care for the nursing staff.
  • Analyzes and evaluates daily staffing and makes appropriate changes using patient acuity and staffing guidelines.
  • Interacts with Contact Nurses every shift with assistance given as needed.
  • Assist with planning, implementing, and evaluating a nursing care and delivery system for nursing that reflects the hospital and nursing department philosophy.
  • Applies effective principles of leadership in coordinating the activities of the nursing departments.
  • Serves as a liaison between nursing staff, nursing administration, and medical staff.
  • Responds to emergency pages (Fire, Disasters, and codes including Trauma Codes, Stroke and Sepsis Alerts.)
  • Makes necessary arrangements for special occurrences such as after-hour surgeries, patient deaths, transfers by ambulance, and organ donations.
  • Follows appropriate Chain of Command when informing leadership of occurrences needing administrative action.
  • Facilitates orientation for house supervisors new to the position.
  • Promotes good working relationships among nursing staff members in department, between departments, and with other disciplines and departments.
  • Requirements:
  • Responsible for helping departments meet and maintain productivity goals.
  • Participant in organization and leadership development programs.
  • Facilitates, communicates and enforces necessary policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that the standards of the regulatory agencies (JCAHO, etc.) are met on the units.
  • Demonstrates job related aspects of patient safety to assure a safe environment, safe and effective use of equipment and technology, and decreased risk of potential adverse patient occurrences.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's and division's policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of and supports hospital mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality statements, corporate compliance plan, customer service standards, and the code of ethical behavior.

  • Attends staff meetings including review of meeting minutes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS Education
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing is preferred.
  • Previous courses in management are preferred.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS required, PALS preferred.
Experience
  • Five years hospital clinical nursing experience.
  • Previous experience as shift supervisor, within the most recent past three years.
Essential Physical Abilities/Motor Skills
  • Able to travel independently throughout all Memorial Healthcare facilities.
