Position: Public Safety Telecommunicator - Rice/Steele 911 Dispatch Center

Public Safety Supervisor – Owatonna, MN

Full‑time position in a 24/7 environment. Hourly pay $29.37–$39.97, with $0.75 shift differential for 6:00pm–6:00am and all weekend days.

Responsibilities
  • Receive and prioritize emergency and non‑emergency calls via radio, phone, and computer.
  • Dispatch police, fire, EMS, rescue, and reserves; monitor all radio channels.
  • Operate CAD to enter, track, and manipulate call data; maintain accurate records.
  • Coordinate with law enforcement, fire/rescue, medical, emergency management, and municipal units operating in the field.
  • Utilize NCIC/MNJIS terminal to verify driver records, vehicle registrations, criminal histories, and other restricted data.
  • Operate national crime information center, public notification system, and emergency notification services.
  • Train new employees; maintain a clean and respectful work environment.
  • Notify Shift Supervisor of all critical incidents or other matters requiring their attention.
Minimum

Position Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Pass required background check and psychological evaluation
  • Basic computing skills: email, Outlook, web browsing, Adobe PDF, word processing, spreadsheets; type 30 WPM
Desired Qualifications
  • Communications experience
  • Two years as a public safety communications operator or dispatcher
  • Experience in customer service
  • Experience or education in law enforcement, fire, or EMS training
  • Previous experience in criminal justice, corrections, or courts
Required Licenses/Certifications
  • State of MN Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) certification
  • NIMS training
  • Public Safety Telecommunicator certification
  • Law Communications certification
  • Fire Communications certification
  • Emergency Medical Dispatcher certification

Training for the above certifications is provided by the employer and is required within six months of hire.

Hours

Full‑time, generally a 12‑hour shift in a 24/7/365 environment. Employees may be required to work outside their regular schedule under certain circumstances.

Selection Process

May include: job‑related interview, typing and comprehension testing, criminal history/background check, background investigation, and psychological evaluation.
