About Balanced Ops

Balanced Ops provides fractional accounting, finance, and operational leadership to nonprofits and growing mission-driven organizations. We partner with executive teams to build strong financial systems, improve reporting clarity, and create the operational infrastructure required for sustainable growth.

We are not just bookkeepers — and not quite traditional CFOs. We sit in the middle, ensuring that financial operations are tight, strategic decisions are grounded in real data, and leadership teams have what they need to move confidently.

As we continue to grow, we are building a senior team that can deepen client impact while strengthening our internal infrastructure.

The Role

We’re seeking a Director of Financial Operations to serve as a senior-level, client-facing finance leader across a portfolio of clients. This role bridges the gap between core financial operations and CFO advisory.

You will oversee the integrity of monthly financial processes, elevate reporting and analysis, and engage directly with client leadership to ensure financial information is accurate, timely, and actionable.

This role also plays a key part in the continued growth of Balanced Ops — helping refine service delivery, strengthen internal systems, mentor junior team members, and contribute to how we scale responsibly.

This is a fractional contract role averaging approximately 10 hours per week, with potential to expand as the firm grows.

Availability Requirement: While much of the work can be completed flexibly, the Director must be available for scheduled client meetings and internal team meetings during standard business hours which are typically 1-2 hours per week.

What You’ll Do Financial Operations Leadership
  • Oversee and strengthen monthly close processes across client engagements
  • Review financial statements for accuracy, completeness, and clarity
  • Ensure reconciliations, accruals, and reporting timelines are consistently met
  • Improve systems, workflows, and internal controls
  • Identify operational inefficiencies and implement practical improvements
Planning, Analysis & Reporting
  • Develop and refine monthly and quarterly financial reporting packages
  • Lead variance analysis and provide narrative insights for leadership
  • Support annual budgeting and reforecasting processes
  • Build and maintain financial models for scenario planning
  • Translate financial data into decision-ready insights
Client Partnership & Advisory Bridge
  • Serve as a direct point of contact for Executive Directors, CEOs, and senior leadership on client staff
  • Present financial reports in client meetings and answer strategic questions
  • Identify financial risks and growth opportunities
  • Bridge tactical financial execution with broader CFO-level strategy
  • Support implementation of financial systems and infrastructure improvements
Internal Team Collaboration & Firm Growth
  • Partner closely with the Founder and internal team members to ensure consistent service quality
  • Provide oversight, feedback, coaching & development to bookkeepers and operational financial staff.
  • Help refine internal workflows, reporting templates, and financial standards
  • Contribute to onboarding new clients and shaping service delivery models
  • Identify opportunities to expand client engagements or improve service offerings
  • Support the development of scalable systems as Balanced Ops grows
Who You Are
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance, MBA or CPA preferred, but not required.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in financial management, operations, or a related field
  • Experience supporting or overseeing month-end close and financial reporting
  • Experience contributing to budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
  • Comfortable partnering with senior leadership on financial matters
  • Confident engaging directly with client executives
  • Systems-oriented and process-minded
  • Familiarity with Asana, Keeper (now Double), Quick Books Online preferred
  • Clear communicator who can explain financial concepts to non-financial leaders
  • Comfortable working independently in a fractional environment
  • Collaborative and energized by helping build and grow a firm

Nonprofit experience is strongly preferred, but we welcome candidates with relevant finance and operational leadership experience in adjacent sectors.
