This role oversees Level 3, 4, and 5 commissioning of base building systems and components in a Data Center environment. The position handles testing and validation of connectivity, network infrastructure, security, life safety, building subsystems, finishes, transformers, electrical switch gear, UPS, STS, PDU, and electrical distribution equipment. Work hours may include nights and/or weekends, and the role may require an estimated 75%+ travel to other sites across the U.S.
Responsibilities- Assist in all site construction activity and installations, coordinating with the QTS Development Team and external resources to ensure system design, installation, and testing meet operational standards.
- Conduct thorough commissioning activities, ensuring all systems are installed, tested, and validated according to industry standards and client specifications.
- Monitor issues during commissioning, working closely with the project team to resolve technical challenges and provide feedback to program management for continuous improvement.
- Create and/or review detailed commissioning documentation, including test procedures, reports, and as‑built documentation.
- Witness testing of all equipment during commissioning and validate sequence of operations and receipt of operational documentation.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams—design engineers, project managers, contractors, commissioning agents, and facilities operations—to ensure seamless integration of systems without impacting operational areas.
- Implement quality control measures to meet the highest standards during construction and commissioning, adhering to regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
- Mentor junior Commissioning Engineers to develop their skills and serve as a subject matter expert.
- Seven to ten years of technical training, military training, or workplace equivalency.
- Extensive background in building maintenance, network, telecommunications, fire detection/suppression systems, electrical distribution, and emergency power systems.
- Ability to travel to other Data Center locations as required.
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite.
- Experience in data center engineering, commissioning, project management, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of mechanical systems used in a data center environment.
- Extensive understanding of electrical systems in a data center setting.
- Prior work developing and reviewing commissioning documentation.
- Experience leading and mentoring a team of junior commissioning engineers.
- Advanced ability to analyze operations of various systems, determine the cause of problems and malfunctions, and take corrective action.
- Advanced knowledge of equipment/building operations and maintenance, including elevators, finishes, single‑line drawings, critical scripted work, and sequence of operations.
- Ability to acquire and apply job‑related knowledge within set guidelines and expectations.
- Ability to develop solutions and create technical plans on projects.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to function effectively in a team environment.
- Proficient computer skills, including MS Office, Outlook, and web‑based applications.
- Position may involve frequent typing, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, and lifting. Lifting requirements up to 50 lbs. regularly, with heavier weight performed with assistance or lifting aids.
