Position Summary

The English Department at Johnson County Community College is searching for a full‑time Professor of English, primarily teaching college composition. Full‑time faculty in English teach the equivalent of 15 credit hours per semester in composition with the potential also to teach literature and creative writing courses. Faculty are expected to be collaborative, treat everyone with dignity and respect, demonstrate professional, courteous behavior, defend free inquiry, emphasize excellent teaching while pursuing research interests, and maintain professional connections with regional and national composition, rhetoric, and literature professional organizations.

The successful candidate will perform other duties expected of full‑time faculty, including maintaining scheduled office hours, developing and revising curriculum, implementing course and program assessment of student learning outcomes, participating in departmental and college meetings, serving on committees, and other duties as assigned. Teaching assignments could be a combination of online, hybrid, and face‑to‑face classes and are subject to change.

Founded in 1969, JCCC educates over 18,000 students, many of whom are non‑traditional, military veterans, immigrants, international, and first‑generation. The college maintains a rich cultural community, an award‑winning contemporary art museum, and a center for the performing arts.

Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in English.
  • Demonstrated expertise in English instruction, effective teaching practices, and effective communication skills to guide student learning in the classroom.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the teaching mission of a community college.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to collaborate with faculty, administration, and people from the community.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in English.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching English at the community college level.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach effectively across multiple course delivery methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple sections of composition per academic semester/quarter.
  • Demonstrated interest in scholarly engagement.
  • Demonstrated experience working with students of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Teaching – Faculty members are expected to be effective teachers and excel in course instruction. Minimum expectations include:

  • Content expertise:
    Deep subject knowledge, including key concepts, current research, methodologies, tools and techniques, and meaningful applications. Required actions:
    • Possess thorough and accurate knowledge of the specific field/discipline, including the ability to evaluate and apply content.
    • Be committed to professional development by staying current in the discipline.
    • Maintain faculty credentials as required by the college’s accrediting agencies.
  • Instructional methods:
    Sound instructional methods derived from scholarship of teaching and learning, cultivating a supportive learning environment that encourages critical thinking. Required actions:
    • Select and develop instructional materials; plan and organize instruction to enhance student learning; create appropriate assignments to encourage communication skills and higher‑order thinking; use available instructional technology as appropriate.
    • Use a variety of proven engagement and assessment methods that facilitate student mastery of the content.
    • Provide constructive, encouraging, and corrective feedback; evaluate student learning by creating and applying course competencies and accurately evaluating progress.
