Visit Independence is the destination marketing organization (DMO) for Independence, Missouri—a city rich in history, hospitality, and community pride. Known as the starting point for the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California Trails and the hometown of President Harry S. Truman, Independence blends historical significance with vibrant attractions, dining, and events. Visit Independence promotes our city’s unique story and experiences to visitors from across the nation and around the world, while increasing visitor spending and being a lead economic driver in the community.

Position

Summary

The Sales and Service Manager is responsible for selling Independence to prospective clients, including but not limited to meeting planners, tournament directors, and tour operators. This position will also service those groups enhancing their experience in our community to help elevate our partners, venues, and attractions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary point of contact with all potential clients. Create and maintain relationships with potential and current clients for opportunities to book their conference/event in Independence.
  • Establish and continue excellent relationships with our hotel partners, specifically the sales directors.
  • Travel to and represent Independence at trade shows and other industry events.
  • Be aware of industry trends and market projections to adjust sales strategy accordingly.
  • Prepare and submit bids for events or bus tours, serving as the liaison between the client and our hotels and venues.
Service
  • Establish the services offered by Visit Independence to groups.
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Marketing supporting collateral development, sales-related marketing content, sales related marketing campaigns, etc.
  • Offer and manage services requested by clients.
Budget and Team Leadership
  • Manage and execute a tradeshow and sales travel budget.
  • Report on sales metrics, including leads, bookings, assists, and lost business accurately and in a timely manner in iDSS database.
  • Create monthly reports for Executive Director.
Community & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with industry partners, hotels, and facilities.
  • Maintain product knowledge of hotels, meeting facilities, service providers, attractions, transportation, and other venues in Independence.
  • Represent Visit Independence at tourism events, trade shows, and community meetings, when applicable.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in business, Hospitality, or related field.
  • Experience: 2+ years of progressive experience in sales, preferably in a DMO, tourism, or hospitality-related environment.
Skills
  • Must be able to work effectively with others and possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • High standard of ethics and confidentiality.
  • Strong organization and communication skills, attention to detail, multi-task proficiency, initiative, and the ability to adapt in a fast-paced work environment required.
  • Ability to learn new programs specific to the Sales Department operation preferred.
  • CRM database knowledge and skills preferred.
  • Demonstrate exceptional customer service to provide clients with the best overall experience and to ensure repeated business.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Preferred: Familiar with Independence/Missouri tourism market, hotel sales, venue sales or operations, and sales.

The anticipated salary range for this role is $62,000–$67,000, with final compensation determined by experience and qualifications.
