Our Chalk River location is looking for a Chemical Technologist to assist in sample collection, preparation, analysis, and reporting. In this role, you will also mentor junior staff in best laboratory practices and optimize work schedules and instrument analysis times in support of multiple monitoring programs.

- Routinely checking Integrated Environmental Monitoring (EMP, EVMP and GWMP) sampling schedules to ensure required water (both surface and groundwater) and biota samples are collected as required.
- Logging all samples collected and associated data in the branch Laboratory Information Management System.
- Processing water and biota samples following established technical procedures as required within specified time frames.
- Arranging transfer (transport as required) of processed samples for analysis, maintaining Chain of Custody to both internal and external laboratories, whilst following transport protocols.
- Ensuring that Laboratory Quality Control is maintained on all analytical equipment used, including performance trending and the use of laboratory QC samples as specified in appropriate technical procedure.
- Carrying out laboratory non‑radiological and some radiological analysis of environmental samples as required following approved technical procedures within approved time frames.
- Verifying and reporting results within branch Laboratory Information Management System to meet customer’s expectations.
- Responding to queries as the subject matter expert for non‑radiological monitoring for the branch.
- Completing technical qualification cards (TQCs) for self and actively help in the completion of TQCs for more junior staff.
- Developing and/or updating the branch’s technical procedures and processes for technical correctness and clarity.
- Optimizing work schedules for self and others in the group to overlap sample collection/preparation and instrument analysis times.
- Troubleshooting equipment issues and act as the main contact for the verification of the group’s capital assets.
- Leading the Environmental and Climate Change Canada Proficiency Testing and help investigate data anomalies for failed tests and any other QC failures relating to non‑radiological monitoring.
- Leading the implementation of improvement initiatives for the group.

- Education
- Graduation from a recognised institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education, in a field relevant to the position (e.g. Chemistry, Environmental Technology) and normally five years of pertinent technological experience. Higher post‑secondary education would be an asset.
OR Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and normally has over ten years of pertinent and progressive experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
- Graduation from a recognised institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education, in a field relevant to the position (e.g. Chemistry, Environmental Technology) and normally five years of pertinent technological experience. Higher post‑secondary education would be an asset.
- Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience working in a laboratory environment involving chemical preparations and analyses using established procedures.
- Experience with specialised analytical equipment and techniques for environmental chemical applications.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) with a strong attention to fine details, particularly in data review and proofreading.
- Proficient in wet chemistry, solution preparation and instrument calibration and use.
- Expert in non‑radiological chemical analysis and routine chemical laboratory methods such as pH and conductivity measurements, elemental analyses, use of analytical balance, etc.
- Experience in providing technical expertise and coaching to junior staff and easily responds to issues and challenges (e.g. data anomalies, computer malfunctions, building issues).
- Adept with optimising work schedules to overlap sample collection/preparation and instrument analysis times. Accomplished in technical procedure and report development and update.
