Position: Community Harvest Assistants 2026

Community Harvest Assistant – Ottawa Food Bank

Join the Ottawa Food Bank’s Community Harvest Farm as a Community Harvest Assistant for the season beginning early April 2026 through early November 2026. This full‑time role is located in Stittsville, Ottawa, Ontario and involves working outdoors on a 10‑acre fruit and vegetable farm.

About the Farm

The Ottawa Food Bank’s Community Harvest Farm operates on donated land, producing over 150,000 pounds of fresh produce annually. The farm supplies a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables to the Food Bank’s member agencies across the city.

Major Responsibilities
  • Perform field‑based tasks such as seeding, planting, weeding, harvesting, washing, packing, irrigation, and occasional equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Lead, coach, and facilitate a positive volunteer experience; conduct pre‑shift group orientations, provide instructions, and supervise volunteers during field work.
  • Prepare detailed daily logs of volunteer and staff field work.
  • Transport produce from the farm to the Ottawa Food Bank warehouse as needed.
  • Perform related duties as required by the Community Harvest Manager or Coordinator.
Skills & Experience
  • Experience and a demonstrated interest in agriculture and farming.
  • Experience supporting and working with people and groups; strong customer service skills.
  • Background in market gardening, horticulture, or food insecurity is an asset.
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills; fosters an inclusive, diverse, and equitable environment.
  • Independent worker with high dependability and reliability; strong work ethic and flexibility to manage dynamic conditions and multiple priorities.
  • Experience in a physically demanding role is preferred.
  • Valid G‑level driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Experience operating farming equipment is an asset.
  • Current First Aid certification is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel is an asset.
Working Conditions

The position requires regular and demanding physical activity (lifting objects up to 22 kg, maneuvering large pallets, operating farming equipment). The work is repetitive and requires bending, squatting, kneeling, walking, reaching, and twisting. The role involves long days (10+ hours) outdoors in variable weather; weekend shifts may be required. Reliable transportation is required, as the farm is not accessible by public transit.

Language

Requirements

Good verbal communication skills are required;
French is an asset.

Compensation

Ontario Living Wage employer: $24.04 per hour, commensurate with experience.
