Location

  • Export Development Canada operates in a hybrid work environment, currently requiring employees to work in the office 2 days per week. (subject to change)
  • This role can be performed from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa.

Compensation Details:

  • Legal Services 18:
    Salaries typically range from $96,557 to $128,743 annually, based on qualifications and experiences, plus a performance-based incentive.
  • Legal Services 19:
    Salaries typically range from $112,006 to $149,341 annually, based on qualifications and experiences, plus a performance-based incentive.

Team Overview

Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, Litigation, Governance, Trade and Operations, you will join a dynamic, team-oriented unit of legal professionals and provide EDC with legal advice in various areas. Your role will include providing legal advice and handling files in areas such as public procurement and vendor relations, governance, litigation, compliance, employment law, marketing, financial crimes, access to information and privacy.

What

you will be doing
  • Provide legal advice on matters pertaining to EDC’s activities, including rights and obligations under EDC contracts, interpretation of internal documentation and legislative requirements in areas of specialty, and compliance requirements (e.g., interpreting the Export Development Act, the Financial Administration Act and other relevant statutes).
  • Retain and supervise the services of external counsel.
  • Provide legal advice and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Support the Corporation with a proactive approach by keeping abreast of relevant legislation and case law and providing legal risk assessments on new requirements.
  • Perform other legal advisory duties as required.
What we are looking for
  • Completion of Undergraduate Degree in Law or other related discipline.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in legal services or equivalent.
  • Member of the Bar in a Canadian province or territory.
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Strong drafting skills; adaptable; strong creative and critical thinking.
  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills; strong relationship management; team orientation.
  • Transaction risk mitigation; interpersonal, multitasking, planning and project management skills; organizational leadership.
What will make you stand out
  • Experience in the federal public sector and/or advising federal Crown Corporations or other public sector entities.
  • Experience in one or more areas: litigation, public procurement, contract negotiation, financial crimes, crown governance, employment law.
  • Bilingual in English and French.
