Position: High Hazard Subject Matter Expert - Hoisting & Rigging
Location: Laurentian Hills

Are you looking for a role that will challenge you? Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is looking for a High Hazard Subject Matter Expert (SME)- Hoisting & Rigging. The purpose of the Hoisting and Rigging SME is to work directly with our Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) staff, planning teams, our field teams, and management/supervision to ensure we are safely and efficiently delivering our work.

You will be expected to work independently, while collaborating with Environmental Remediation Management (ERM) work planning teams, to have line of sight of upcoming work involving hoisting and rigging. Interested? Apply today!

What will you be doing!
  • Supporting staff and management with planning activities to ensure CNL requirements and best practices are incorporated into work control documents.
  • Supporting CNL staff, supervisors, and management during work execution in the specific area of focus.
  • Completing site walk downs to observe work, understand new and existing/historical challenges, and help identify corrective actions.
  • Providing observation feedback on a frequent basis resulting from all field visits/walk downs.
  • Providing expertise, support, and assistance on the development, review, implementation, and monitoring of task and project specific hoisting and rigging requirements and work-plans.
  • Fostering and promoting the reporting of hazards and pause/stop-work scenarios where appropriate.
  • Helping to investigate and follow up on non-compliance observations, incidents, or other gaps identified.
  • Preparing detailed reports and following up on recommended corrective actions associated with completed compliance and oversight reports, incident reports, observations, and root-cause analysis recommendations.
  • Supporting CNL to help improve OSH program and practices through self-generated improvement initiatives and participation in developing and/or updating CNL wide corporate procedures and standards.
  • Supporting hoisting and rigging practices.
  • Working with applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Presenting recommendations, complete regulatory reporting, and technical writing in a clear and effective manner.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
  • Education
    • College diploma or completion of a specialized related trade.
    • CRST and NCSO, CRSP or equivalent recognized designations like the CSP or CMIOSH would be considered an asset.
  • Experience
    • Four to six (4-6) years' of experience in an equivalent role within complex nuclear, research & technology, heavy construction project, heavy manufacturing, industrial processing, mining, oil & gas, or other civil or environmental remediation experience.
    • Experience with in a radiation safety and/or protection setting is an asset but not required.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Excellent interpersonal communication skills – written and oral.
    • Ability to maintain successful working relations at all levels, within the organization and with external stakeholders.
    • Demonstrated organizational skills with high attention to detail and ability to tailor communications to mixed audiences.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
Working Conditions:
  • Working schedule:
    Four (4) days per week, ten (10) hours per day for a forty (40) hour work week.
  • Must be willing and able to wear a respirator and other PPE&C as required.
  • Occasional travel involved.
  • Ability to be physically active (standing, walking) for up to 12 hours a day.
  • Ability to manage stairs, ladders, and other egress equipment to enter all site and building areas including confined space.
  • Extensive walking on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
