JOB SUMMARY
This job is exclusively for Coop Students who are enrolled in a recognized post-secondary co-operative education program in Civil, Transportation or Computer studies and are in their 3rd or 4th year of studies
.
The City of Ottawa Traffic Operations Division is responsible for the design, installation, operation and maintenance of over 1200 signalized intersections. One (1) co-op student is needed to assist the Traffic Engineering Unit staff in performing a broad range of functions related to Traffic Engineering studies, including but not limited to filed studies, technical support, analysis and reporting. During the work term you will:
1. Gain working experience in traffic engineering and traffic control signal operations.
2. Learn the structure of the City of Ottawa Traffic Control Signal System.
3. Obtain practical analytical and planning skills and software applications.
4. Improve your interpersonal skills in a dynamic project environment.
This role is ideal for an individual who has a passion for transportation and technology, with interest in work with a leading municipality in the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and traffic control technologies. We're looking for a self-starter with a positive attitude and willingness to learn. This opportunity will allow you take on new challenges while working on a wide variety of traffic engineering projects.
Key Duties
• Perform standard traffic engineering field studies such as Queuing Studies, Delay Studies, Travel Time Runs and Volume Counts to evaluate traffic signal timing and phasing operations, traffic incident management and observing traffic patterns.
• Investigate complaints about traffic signal timing and phasing and make recommendations for their resolution.
• Using various computerized tools such as Synchro, conduct analysis of traffic data.
• Prepare written reports summarizing field traffic data, containing recommendations based on the results.
• Prepare specific signal timing related databases extracted from the City's central traffic control computer.
• Assist in the preparation, evaluating of data required by the local traffic signal controllers.
• Assist in conducting capacity analysis to evaluate the operation of anticipated changes in traffic patterns or proposed changes to the new City of Ottawa road network.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Enrolment in a recognized co-operative engineering program in Civil, Transportation or Computer studies and are in their 3rd or 4th year of studies.
Knowledge in traffic engineering, and previous work experience in Civil/Transportation Engineering is an asset.
No Experience is required but a knowledge in traffic engineering, and previous work experience in Civil/Transportation Engineering is an asset.
