Assistant SuperintendentJob Description
PrimaryPurpose:
Assist the superintendent in overseeing the operation of several or all district wide divisions by working with directors, campus administrators, and district staff. Support the superintendent in all areas of administrative decision-making and work toward achieving those decisions. Assist the superintendent in building a vision, setting priorities, and developing long and short-range goals for the day-to-day operations of the district.
Qualifications:Education/Certification:
Master’s degree in education, business administration, or equivalent
Valid Texas superintendent certification preferred, or ability to obtain within an agreed upon timeline
TEA certified appraiser
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
Knowledge of federal programs and laws
Knowledge of district-level division operations
Knowledge of school law and hearing procedures
Knowledge of educational philosophy, research, strategies, laws, and policies
Knowledge of curriculum and instruction theory and practical application
Skill in leading efforts to design, implement, measure, and improve educational programs and services
Ability to manage strategic change for the organization
Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
Ability to manage budget and personnel
Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
3 years of successful administrative and leadership experience in education
MajorResponsibilities and Duties:
District Management:
- Oversee the development and delivery of curriculum and instructional programs that incorporate district goals and support student achievement.
- Lead the district-level decision-making process to establish and review the district’s goals and objectives and major classroom instructional programs. Ensure goals and objectives are developed using effective collaborative processes and problem-solving techniques.
- Monitor and reevaluate instructional programs on an ongoing basis using input from teachers and principals, applied research, and student data to determine effectiveness and improve outcomes. Recommend changes and adjustments where appropriate.
- Ensure the necessary time, resources, materials, and technology to support accomplishment of education goals are available.
- Collaborate with curriculum specialists, principals, teachers, and other instructional staff to develop, maintain, and revise curriculum documents based on a systematic review and analysis.
- Engage instructional staff in evaluating and selecting instructional tools and materials to meet student learning needs.
- Actively support the efforts of others to achieve district goals and objectives and campus performance objectives.
- Oversee staff development programs and ensure effective activities that support instructional programs, incorporate input from teachers and principals, and are consistent with the district’s mission are provided.
- Participate in the implementation of the designated teacher appraisal system.
- Provide organizational leadership to assigned departments as directed by the superintendent.
- Assist the superintendent in the daily operation of the school district.
- Develop, recommend, implement, and evaluate long-range plans and projects as directed by the superintendent.
- Ensure a high degree of uniformity in school-related curricular and extra-curricular activities.
- Assist the superintendent in the development and implementation of school safety plans.
- Assist the superintendent in the development of the district’s academic calendar.
- Develop, maintain, and use information systems and records necessary to show progress on performance objectives that address academic excellence indicators, campus improvement plans, and district long-range plans.
- Ensure implementation and compliance of policies established by federal and state law and State Board of Education rules, and local Board policy.
- Assist the superintendent with governmental relations, working with area, state, and national legislators to gather data and information to assist in interpreting the impact of legislation on the district.
- Ensure administration is aware of developments and changes in state, federal, and local laws affecting education.
- Conduct investigations related to allegations of misconduct or impropriety by district staff as requested by the superintendent.
- Select, train, evaluate, and supervise department staff and make recommendations relative to assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
